Vikrant Massey Opens Up On Acting Break, Says ‘Dad Guilt’ Led Him To Pause Career

The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor Vikrant Massey recently revealed the personal motivations behind his decision to take a break from his film career, announcing in December 2024 that he would be stepping away to focus on family life. This development piqued interest and speculation regarding external pressures from the film industry, particularly relating to nepotism. However, Vikrant has clarified that his choice stemmed from feelings of “dad guilt” tied closely to his role as a father to his son, Vardaan.

Reflections on Fatherhood and Family Responsibility

During a recent appearance on Parineeti Chopra’s programme, Mom Talks, Vikrant, accompanied by his wife Sheetal Thakur, reflected on their journey through parenthood. He shared that the hectic schedule surrounding Vardaan’s birth had led to both physical and emotional exhaustion, prompting him to reassess his priorities. Vikrant expressed that the intense emotional investment required in parenting led him to focus on creating more memories at home with his family.

He stated, “You know how much we give of ourselves emotionally, physically, mentally. As a first-time father, my attention was always at home. I didn’t even question what or why I was doing. I just wanted to wrap up my commitments and spend as much time as possible with Vardaan and Sheetal Thakur.” This sentiment captures the depth of his commitment to family, which he felt necessitated a step back from his professional obligations.

Sheetal corroborated Vikrant’s feelings by mentioning his struggle with “dad guilt,” highlighting the emotional challenge many fathers face in balancing work and family. Vikrant noted a particularly moving moment when Vardaan tried to say “papa” for the first time. Although Vardaan only managed to blow air in response, Vikrant found the experience profound, ultimately recognising that it was imperative to be more present at home.

Encouragement for Other Fathers Navigating Similar Paths

In his discussions about fatherhood, Vikrant acknowledged that while fathers typically partake less in daily childcare tasks compared to mothers, they still undergo significant emotional transformations after welcoming a child. He articulated that new fathers can feel out of place when separating from their newborns, often struggling with feelings of envy towards those who can remain at home. This perspective underlines the cultural conditioning that portrays men primarily as providers, which can lead to dilemmas when they wish to be more involved in family matters.

Vikrant encouraged fellow fathers to embrace their vulnerability and the desire to be actively engaged in their children’s lives. He emphasised that acknowledging these feelings could foster a more supportive environment for new parents. Attributing the joy of being at home with family as the “biggest earning” of his life, Vikrant expressed a sense of fulfilment with his decision to prioritise his personal life over his career.

Vikrant Massey and Sheetal Thakur celebrated the arrival of their son Vardaan in February 2024, marking a significant chapter in their lives. His recent reflections not only resonate with new fathers but also contribute to a broader conversation about parental responsibilities in contemporary society.
