Coal-fired power plants across India are experiencing alarming declines in fuel reserves as peak electricity demand continues to soar. Recent data from the indicates that 59 plants are now operating with dangerously low coal stocks. This number has increased from 45 in late August to 59 as of 9 September 2026, highlighting an urgent issue within the energy sector.

These critically low coal stock levels are defined as possessing less than 25 per cent of the required inventory, which equates to a supply sufficient for less than three days of power generation. This development has raised concerns about the capability of the power grid to meet the demands of consumers during this prolonged period of hot weather, which is reportedly keeping electricity consumption at elevated levels.

Record Power Demand Driven by Weather

India’s electricity consumption has remained close to the peak demand record of 270.70 gigawatts (GW) established in May. Over recent days, electricity demand has consistently approached approximately 267 GW, which analysts attribute to increased cooling requirements during the ongoing El Niño weather pattern. The combination of high temperatures and elevated air conditioning usage has driven this demand surge, placing added stress on the energy infrastructure.

Experts note that while renewable energy sources such as solar power have made significant contributions to daytime energy supply, limitations regarding battery storage and decreased water levels in reservoirs present ongoing challenges. Consequently, coal-fired power generation has become even more crucial in maintaining energy supply during these periods of high demand.

Analysts highlight the need for immediate government intervention to increase coal supply to power utilities, particularly via the rail transport system. Manoj Kumar, an analyst at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, has emphasised the importance of maintaining adequate coal inventories to ensure stable electricity provision across the country.

Govt Response and Supply Chain Efforts

In response to the escalating situation, the Indian government has intensified its efforts to boost coal supplies. On 6 September, the country deployed 444 coal rakes to transport coal to power plants, a notable increase from 370 rakes just a few days earlier on 3 September. These logistical enhancements are aimed at ensuring that coal deliveries can keep pace with the rising demand for electricity.

Additionally, Coal India, recognised as the largest coal producer globally, has reported maintaining substantial stockpiles of approximately 76 million metric tons at its mining sites. This suggests that while the immediate coal stock levels at power plants are low, the overall supply chain may still possess the capacity to address the current challenges if properly managed.

The enhanced focus on coal transport and supply indicates the government’s recognition of the critical need to secure energy resources for the nation’s power grid. Policy measures and logistical improvements will now play a vital role in ensuring that the energy demands during this sustained heat wave can suffice without significant interruptions to electricity availability for consumers.
