Youth Congress Protests Against CEC Gyanesh Kumar in Thiruvananthapuram

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Youth Congress conducted a protest march in Thiruvananthapuram on September 30, calling for the dismissal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This demonstration is part of a broader confrontation involving the INDIA bloc with the Election Commission over electoral reforms and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. Participants in the march specifically accused the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) of instigating attacks against them, leading to tensions during the event.

During the protest, members of the Youth Congress removed SFI banners from the scene, which reportedly heightened the situation. The police intervened to disperse the gathered crowd, employing mild lathi charges and tear gas. Despite the unrest, the protest reflected mounting dissatisfaction within the opposition regarding the electoral process.

This protest occurred on the same day that the INDIA bloc convened a meeting in New Delhi, wherein participants demanded CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s immediate resignation, a reversal of the SIR process, and a return to the use of ballot papers for upcoming elections. The escalating tensions reflect deepening concerns associated with the integrity of the electoral oversight.

Key Resolutions from the INDIA Bloc Meeting

Following the coordination meeting at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced a series of nationwide protest actions, termed the “Save Democracy March.” This initiative will take place from October 2 to October 8 at the district level. The proposed actions signify a concerted effort by the INDIA bloc to voice their concerns on electoral governance.

Kharge outlined additional plans for opposition Members of Parliament to march to the Election Commission on October 6. Furthermore, discussions are planned for the second week of October between opposition leaders and President Droupadi Murmu regarding perceived issues within the electoral framework. These planned actions indicate the seriousness with which the INDIA bloc is approaching the current electoral climate.

The demands articulated during the meeting included a range of accusations against the Election Commission. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal accused the CEC of electoral misconduct and asserted several non-negotiable demands aimed at preserving electoral integrity. These encompassed the immediate removal of Gyanesh Kumar, the reversion to previous electoral rolls, and the reinstatement of voting via paper ballots.

Reactions from Political Opponents

The demands put forth by the INDIA bloc have been met with criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan alleged that the opposition’s outcry stems from a “frustration after defeat.” He remarked on the perceived hypocrisy underlying the opposition’s claims by stating that their support for democracy is conditional upon their electoral success.

Leaders from multiple parties attended the INDIA bloc meeting, including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, All India Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, and several others. While Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party was absent, he ensured representation by sending two MPs. This gathering has reinforced the unity among opposition parties amid rising challenges from the ruling government.

In summary, these recent events underscore an increasingly volatile political environment in India as opposition parties mobilise against electoral oversight. The Youth Congress protest, coupled with the demands from the INDIA bloc, reflects broader concerns regarding democracy and governance in the nation. As various parties voice their dissatisfaction, the discourse surrounding electoral integrity is likely to intensify in the lead-up to upcoming elections.
