What’s New in iOS 26.4? Apple Adds Widgets, Features and Security Enhancements

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple has announced the rollout of its latest update, iOS 26.4, designed to enhance various applications including Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Reminders. This update is accessible to all compatible iPhones starting from the iPhone 11 and newer models. However, users will have to wait for the highly anticipated AI-driven Siri enhancements.

New Ambient Music Widget and Reminders Enhancements

The update introduces an innovative Ambient Music widget that can be positioned on either the Home Screen or Lock Screen. This feature provides users access to a selection of ambient music specifically tailored for activities such as sleep, productivity, and overall wellness. Additionally, the Reminders app has been upgraded with a new “Urgent” section. This functionality collects reminders marked as urgent automatically, aiding users in managing their critical tasks more efficiently.

Camera App Improves Audio Features

Another notable enhancement in iOS 26.4 is found in the Camera app, which now includes an Audio Zoom option. When activated, this feature allows for improved sound clarity during video recordings by focusing audio on the subject as the camera zooms in. While users await the AI upgrade for Siri, the update does enable AI services in Apple CarPlay, allowing drivers to interact with AI assistants like Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT in a hands-free manner. However, these AI applications do not extend control over vehicle operations or iPhone settings.

Upgrades to Apple Music

The iOS 26.4 update also brings several enhancements to Apple Music. A new “Concerts Near You” feature allows users to find shows and tour dates for their favorite artists in their vicinity. The app also displays full-page artwork for albums and playlists, offering a refreshed visual experience. Users can now add the same song to multiple playlists at once, simplifying playlist management. Furthermore, the introduction of Playlist Playground, an AI-enabled feature, offers users the opportunity to generate playlists based on text prompts. Suggested prompts include themes like “Morning coffee music” or “Disco songs that defined the 1970s,” which curate lists of 25 songs automatically based on user inputs. However, this particular feature is currently restricted to users in the United States.

New Emoji Characters and Improved Song Recognition

For those who enjoy using emojis, the update has introduced eight new characters, including a trombone, treasure chest, distorted face, and hairy creature. In addition to the playful new features, iOS 26.4 enhances song recognition capabilities, allowing the device to identify tracks even without an internet connection, with results displaying once the device is reconnected online.

Device Protection and Podcast Enhancements

The iOS 26.4 update brings additional security by enabling Stolen Device Protection by default for all users, a feature that previously required manual activation. Apple Podcasts also sees improvements, as users can now smoothly switch between audio and video versions of a podcast directly within the application. The Messages app receives new animations for various actions, including the initiation of new conversations, providing a more dynamic user experience.
