West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Criticizes BJP Over Land and Voter Allegations

The CSR Journal Magazine

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on April 1, highlighting various allegations against the party as the 2026 assembly elections approach. In a press interaction, she accused the BJP of attempting to seize land and delete voter names, asserting that such actions exemplify divisive politics.

Banerjee specifically mentioned an alleged attempt to take over the land of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, stating that the BJP should feel ashamed. She asserted that the BJP’s behavior resembles that of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the past, claiming voter deletions targeted specific individuals to manipulate the electoral roll.

Historical Context of the BJP’s Role

During her address, Banerjee emphasized the historical context, asserting that the BJP did not exist during India’s struggle for independence. According to her, the party is involved in corruption and disseminating false information. She referred to incidents of violence during the celebration of Ram Navami, stating that such actions further display their disregard for democratic principles. Banerjee indicated that it remains crucial to defeat the BJP in the upcoming elections, vowing to prevent the party from regaining influence in West Bengal.

Escalating Tensions in Kolkata

Banerjee’s remarks come at a time of heightened tensions outside the Chief Electoral Officer’s office in Kolkata. Recent clashes erupted between workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP over allegations concerning the mass submission of Form 6 applications. This form is utilized for the fresh inclusion of names in the electoral roll. These conflicts were reportedly sparked when TMC members claimed that a BJP worker was attempting to deliver over 400 Form 6 applications to the CEO’s office.

Allegations of Voter Fraud

Banerjee has formally addressed Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the BJP of engaging in fraudulent practices. She asserted that BJP representatives were caught submitting numerous applications aimed at incorporating non-residents into West Bengal’s electoral lists, an act she referred to as voter hijacking. The Chief Minister demanded that the Election Commission take strict action against these alleged illegal and unconstitutional practices.

Response from Election Authorities

In response to the allegations, the Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal defended his office, stating that he could not monitor every individual entering the office with applications. Agarwal emphasized that the priority should be conducting elections across the state rather than inspecting each form submitted. This dispute has led to significant protests from TMC supporters, asserting concerns over the integrity of the electoral process.

Police Action Amid Protests

As the situation intensified outside the CEO’s office, police and central forces were deployed to manage the potentially volatile environment. Law enforcement officials, equipped with batons, attempted to disperse the large crowd of protesters to restore order. The conflict escalated when BJP workers also arrived at the scene, resulting in altercations between party members and TMC supporters. TMC officials have raised suspicions regarding the BJP’s intentions to influence the electoral results by registering voters from other states, particularly Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Formal Complaints Filed

Moreover, TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee filed a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer, alleging that the BJP’s actions could lead to a substantial alteration of West Bengal’s demographic composition through the addition of voters from outside the state. He contended that the BJP has submitted around 30,000 Form 6 applications en masse. The ongoing altercations and claims underscore the charged political atmosphere as the state heads into its electoral phase.
