VP Election on the Cards: Nitish Kumar, Manoj Sinha Among Contenders

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Election Commission announced on Wednesday that the process for electing the next Vice President has begun. This announcement comes two days after former VP Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned due to health reasons. According to the rules, the new Vice President must be elected at the earliest. The successor will receive a full five-year term, despite the former having served two years. In a press note, the Election Commission stated that the Home Ministry has been notified of Dhankhar’s resignation, and the election schedule will be announced soon.

The press release also mentioned that a few pre-election activities have already begun.

Who Can Be the Successor?

As per speculation, three prominent names are being considered as Dhankhar’s potential successor. First on the list is Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who may step down to make way for younger leadership as the state heads toward elections. The other two names in circulation are Manoj Sinha and VK Saxena. Another possible candidate is the Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh.

Dhankhar’s Sudden Move

Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down as Vice President citing health reasons, leaving the country’s second-highest constitutional post vacant. He becomes only the third sitting Vice President to resign before completing his term, after VV Giri and R. Venkataraman. His resignation came just hours after the opening day of the Monsoon Session.

The Opposition has questioned the timing, casting doubt on whether health was the real reason. Previously, the same Opposition had accused Dhankhar of bias and even pushed for his impeachment.
