Vikram Doraiswami Appointed as India’s Next Ambassador to China

The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed the appointment of Vikram Doraiswami as the next Ambassador of India to China. He is currently serving as the High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom. This announcement was made in an official statement on March 19.

Career Overview and Experience

Vikram K. Doraiswami, an Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1992 batch, has had an extensive career in diplomacy. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, he spent a year in journalism. Doraiswami holds a master’s degree in history from Delhi University.

Following his in-service training in New Delhi, he commenced his diplomatic career as a Third Secretary in the Indian Embassy in Hong Kong in May 1994. He also completed a Diploma in Chinese Language at the New Asia Yale-in-Asia Language School, located at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Assignments in China and Other Countries

In September 1996, Doraiswami was assigned to the Indian Embassy in Beijing, where he worked for nearly four years. After returning to the Ministry of External Affairs in 2000, he took on the role of Deputy Chief of Protocol. His career further advanced when he became a Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of India a couple of years later.

In 2006, he assumed the position of Political Counselor at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York and was later appointed as the Consul General in Johannesburg, South Africa, in October 2009.

Roles in South Asia and International Organizations

Upon his return to New Delhi in July 2011, Doraiswami led the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Division within the Ministry of External Affairs. He played a key role as the coordinator for the Fourth BRICS Summit held in New Delhi in March 2012.

His experience expanded further when he served as Joint Secretary in the Americas Division from October 2012 to October 2014. Subsequently, he became India’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan in October 2014 and was appointed as Ambassador to South Korea in April 2015.

Recent Positions and Contributions

After concluding his mission in South Korea, Doraiswami returned to the Ministry in July 2018, where he led the department managing relations with Bangladesh and Myanmar. In April 2019, he was instrumental in establishing a new department focused on the Indo-Pacific region.

Following a promotion in December 2019, he was designated as Additional Secretary for International Organizations and Summits. His most recent role before the UK appointment was as the Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, starting on October 5, 2020.

Personal Interests and Language Proficiency

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Vikram Doraiswami engages in various interests, including reading, sports, fitness, travel, and jazz music. He is also fluent in several languages, including Chinese, French, and Korean, which further enhances his capabilities in international diplomacy.
