Uttar Pradesh’s Rs 134 Crore Initiative Transforms Council Schools into Sports Talent Hubs

In a transformative move, the Yogi Adityanath-led government has allocated Rs 134 crore for the 2025–26 academic year to revolutionise Uttar Pradesh’s council schools into centers of sports excellence. This initiative seeks to identify and nurture athletic talent from rural and small-town areas, providing students with opportunities to excel in sports alongside academics.

Structured Training Aligned with National Standards

The training model draws inspiration from the Sports Authority of India (SAI), emphasising structured, professional-level coaching. Students selected for national competitions in Under-14, Under-17, and Under-19 categories will undergo intensive 10-day training camps. These camps aim to enhance team coordination, physical conditioning, and mental preparedness, ensuring athletes are well-prepared for national events.

The Rs 134 crore budget is strategically distributed across various school levels: Rs 43.382 crore for 86,764 primary schools, Rs 45.245 crore for 45,245 junior high schools and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs), and Rs 5.76 crore for 2,304 secondary and senior secondary schools. Additionally, Rs 19.41 crore is earmarked for the ‘One KGBV, One Sport’ scheme, Rs 14.92 crore for open gyms and sports materials in KGBVs, and Rs 5.33 crore for national-level training camps.

Empowering Girls Through ‘One KGBV, One Sport’ Scheme

One KGBV, One Sport’ initiative focuses on providing girls in KGBVs with specialised training in a single sport, fostering expertise and confidence. This approach aims to create a conducive environment for female athletes, encouraging their participation and success in various sports disciplines.

To promote physical fitness, open gym facilities are being established in all 746 KGBVs. These gyms are designed to help students build strength, endurance, and overall physical health, laying a solid foundation for athletic performance.

Expert Coaching and Mentorship

Physical education instructors, appointed under the Right to Education Act, will lead the training programs. These instructors, stationed at block and district levels, will provide technical coaching and mentorship, ensuring that students receive quality training and guidance in their sporting endeavors.

This comprehensive initiative reflects the government’s commitment to fostering a robust sports culture within educational institutions. By integrating sports training with academic education, Uttar Pradesh aims to produce well-rounded individuals who excel both in the classroom and on the field, contributing to the state’s and nation’s sporting achievements.
