US Views India With Deep Respect: Elbridge Colby After India Visit

The CSR Journal Magazine

The United States has reiterated its strong strategic commitment to India, with Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby concluding a high-level visit to New Delhi that focused on advancing defence cooperation and operationalising key bilateral frameworks.

Colby, who was in India from Tuesday to Thursday, held a series of meetings with top Indian officials as part of efforts to implement the 2026 National Defence Strategy and strengthen the evolving US-India Major Defence Partnership.

High-Level Talks Advance Defence Framework

During his visit, Colby met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, engaging in discussions centred on regional security, strategic alignment, and expanding defence collaboration.

A key highlight of the trip was the 18th US-India Defence Policy Group meeting, which Colby co-chaired alongside Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The meeting focused on advancing the framework for the US-India Major Defence Partnership, an agreement signed in October 2025 by US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

According to the Pentagon, the framework aims to deepen operational coordination, enhance intelligence and information sharing, and expand cooperation in defence industrial production, as well as science and technology.

Colby’s engagements also included consultations with US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, reflecting coordination within the American diplomatic establishment on South and Central Asian affairs.

Focus On Indo-Pacific And Strategic Balance

Addressing a gathering at the Ananta Centre in New Delhi, Colby underscored the long-term durability of the India-US partnership and outlined Washington’s strategic vision for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.

He emphasised that both nations share a common interest in ensuring that no single power dominates the region, highlighting India’s central role in maintaining a favourable balance of power.

“The United States views India with deep respect—as a republic of continental scale, a nation with a proud strategic tradition, and a country whose decisions will shape the Indo-Pacific and the global landscape,” Colby said.

He also pointed to shared principles between the two countries, particularly the belief that Asia’s future should be shaped by sovereign nations acting independently, despite differences in geography and historical experience.

Defence Deals And Operational Coordination

The visit also saw discussions on several ongoing and proposed defence deals, signalling tangible progress in bilateral military cooperation.

Among the key areas of focus was India’s plan to acquire six additional P-8I anti-submarine warfare aircraft, further enhancing its maritime surveillance capabilities. Talks were also held on the procurement of Javelin anti-tank guided missiles under the emergency route, as well as Excalibur precision-guided artillery ammunition, for which India has already signed a Rs 300 crore deal.

These discussions reflect a broader push to enhance interoperability between the two countries’ armed forces and strengthen India’s defence capabilities amid evolving regional security challenges.

The US Department of War stated that Colby’s visit was aimed at advancing goals set out by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in their February 2025 joint statement, particularly in implementing the defence partnership framework.

As both countries continue to expand cooperation across military and strategic domains, Colby’s visit marks a significant step in translating high-level commitments into operational outcomes, reinforcing a partnership that is increasingly central to Indo-Pacific stability.
