US Plans to Regain Control Over Strait of Hormuz, Says Treasury Secretary

The CSR Journal Magazine

In an interview on Fox News, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the United States intends to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil transportation. He noted that while some nations have made individual agreements with Iran to navigate the strait, the US plans to enhance its presence, potentially through American or multinational naval escorts. According to Bessent, an increase in maritime traffic is being observed, stating that the market remains adequately supplied as more ships transit the strait following these agreements. He emphasized that the US aims to establish freedom of navigation in this critical area.

US Military Strategies Against Iran

Also on the same day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed concerns about Iran’s navy during an appearance on ABC News. He claimed that the US has significantly degraded Iran’s naval capabilities and its defense infrastructure. Rubio asserted that President Trump is committed to ensuring that Iran does not maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz indefinitely. He indicated that the administration is poised to take decisive actions to achieve its objectives regarding Iran’s influence in the region within a short timeframe.

Iran’s Response to US Actions

In response to the US statements, Iranian officials have criticized Washington’s approach, suggesting that US claims concerning diplomacy are met with skepticism both domestically and internationally. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson pointed out the inconsistency in US policies regarding negotiations. He highlighted Iran’s clear and stable position throughout the negotiation process and confirmed that Iran did not participate in a recent meeting involving foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt that took place in Islamabad.

Negotiations and Military Threats

Reports indicate that US President Trump has suggested that indirect negotiations between the US and Iran, mediated by Pakistani representatives, are progressing positively. However, tensions remain high as Trump has threatened to target Iran’s civilian energy infrastructure if access to the Strait of Hormuz is not restored. In a statement, he warned of potential military actions against major Iranian energy sites unless a favorable agreement is reached promptly, stating that it is crucial for Iran to ensure that the strait is operational for maritime traffic.

Escalating Regional Tensions

The situation unfolds as the conflict between the US, its allies, and Iran continues to intensify, marking a second month of heightened security challenges in West Asia and the Gulf region. The ongoing dialogue between the US and Iran is framed within a larger context of military operations and geopolitical maneuvering, suggesting that the situation remains fluid and complex as both sides navigate their interests in this critical waterway.
