Inspired by the vision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a new era of development is unfolding in the eight aspirational districts of Uttar Pradesh. These districts, once considered backwards, are now emerging as models of progress, thanks to innovative initiatives that have been recognised as best practices.
Notably, the transformative efforts in Bahraich, Maharajganj, and Shravasti are not only empowering local communities but also reshaping the socio-economic landscape through a combination of innovation, community participation, and technological integration. Guided by NITI Aayog and driven by the dedication of local administrations, these districts are setting new benchmarks for inclusive development.
Bahraich: Bamboo market and multi-layer farming fuel rural prosperity
Bahraich has pioneered a unique initiative through the establishment of a bamboo-based (B-2) market, providing a dedicated platform for Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to sell handmade bamboo products. This market is empowering local women economically and promoting indigenous craftsmanship.
Additionally, the district has adopted a multi-layer farming approach, promoting the cultivation of Napier grass alongside crops such as pumpkins, gourds, and bitter gourds. These efforts have significantly boosted farmers’ incomes. Furthermore, an MoU between local Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and Patanjali for turmeric procurement has effectively linked farmers to larger markets, ensuring better returns.
Maharajganj: Rehabilitation and urban-rural integration through innovation
Maharajganj has implemented several impactful initiatives that are now serving as models for other districts. Among these is the “Maa Pateshwari Villa City” project, which provides safe housing and livelihood opportunities to families displaced by floods. This rehabilitation project is a holistic effort aimed at restoring stability and self-reliance.
Additionally, the Vikas Sankul Yojana has bridged the urban-rural divide by delivering essential amenities, such as clean drinking water, electricity, and roads, to rural areas. This has significantly enhanced the quality of life for residents and fostered sustainable development.
Shravasti: Groundbreaking reforms in education and health
Shravasti has seen remarkable improvements in education and healthcare through targeted interventions. Sanitation workers have been appointed in every school, improving cleanliness and hygiene. The formation of “Bulawa Dals” has played a key role in boosting school attendance by encouraging parents to send their children to school.
Learning outcomes are being closely monitored using Google Sheets, leading to measurable improvements in educational quality. In the healthcare sector, 215 Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) have been provided with scooters through CSR support, enabling them to deliver essential health services in remote areas. Additionally, a Nutrition Rehabilitation Center (NRC) has been established to treat severely malnourished children, with support from NITI Aayog and the Government of India.
These success stories from Bahraich, Maharajganj, and Shravasti are not only empowering local communities but also serving as guiding lights for development across Uttar Pradesh. Through innovation, collaboration, and visionary leadership, the state’s aspirational districts are scripting a new chapter of inclusive and sustainable growth.
