Unhappy With ₹1,000 Pay Hike, ASHA Workers Protest Outside Bengal Health Department HQ

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hundreds of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) gathered outside the West Bengal Health Department headquarters in Kolkata to protest a recent salary increase that they claim is inadequate. The protesters voiced dissatisfaction with the ₹1,000 hike in their monthly remuneration, calling it insufficient in light of their workload and responsibilities.

Demand for Monthly Wages of ₹15,000

The ASHA workers are demanding a fixed monthly payment of at least ₹15,000, arguing that the current compensation structure does not reflect their contribution to the public healthcare sector. At present, most ASHA workers receive a performance-based honorarium, which varies depending on the services delivered. In many cases, workers report earning amounts significantly lower than the state’s minimum wage standards.

Workers Cite Inadequate Compensation

Protesters highlighted their critical role in the rural healthcare network, particularly through duties such as immunisation outreach, maternal and child health services, and disease awareness programs. Many stated that the modest increase fails to address the economic challenges they face. “A ₹1,000 increase does not change our situation. We deserve at least ₹15,000 per month given the responsibilities we shoulder,” one ASHA worker said during the protest.

Longstanding Grievances Escalate

The demonstration is part of a long-running demand by ASHA workers across various states for fair wages, social security, and official employee status. In West Bengal, workers allege that promises made in the past by state officials regarding salary revisions and health benefits have not been adequately fulfilled. Many also claim they have not received timely reimbursements for out-of-pocket expenses incurred during fieldwork.

No Immediate Response From Health Authorities

As the protest continued outside the Swasthya Bhavan, the state’s health department building, senior officials had yet to meet with the demonstrators or issue a public response. Protesters said they would continue their agitation until the government agrees to re-evaluate the compensation policy and hold discussions with representatives of ASHA workers. Some groups suggested they would escalate their protests if their concerns are not addressed promptly.

Background of ASHA Programme

The ASHA programme, launched under the National Rural Health Mission, employs women from local communities to serve as the first point of contact in rural public health delivery. Though classified as volunteers, they perform essential tasks that contribute directly to mother-and-child health outcomes and disease control. Despite their role in vital government healthcare initiatives, ASHA workers have repeatedly raised concerns about the lack of fixed salaries, job security, and formal recognition as employees.
