Trump Suggests Cuba Could Be Next Target After Iran

The CSR Journal Magazine

President Donald Trump indicated on Thursday that following efforts in Iran, the United States may shift its focus towards Cuba. During an event at the White House honoring Inter Miami, the 2025 MLS champions, Trump discussed the situation in Iran and hinted at potential actions regarding Cuba.

Statements on Cuba

Trump affirmed that the priority remains to “fix” and “finish” the challenges posed by Iran, but suggested that Cuba could be addressed in the future. He addressed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a Miami-born son of Cuban immigrants, stating, “You’ve been doing a fantastic job on a place called Cuba.” Trump expressed optimism about future relations with Cuba for people he described as “unbelievable.”

Current Situation in Cuba

The United States has enforced an energy blockade on Cuba, severely limiting the island’s fuel supplies. This policy followed the U.S. capture of Nicolas Maduro from Venezuela, a significant oil supplier to Cuba. Since January 9, Cuba has not imported any oil, leading airlines to reduce flight operations and exacerbating the ongoing economic crisis.

Concerns Among Cubans

Trump’s comments have stirred anxiety among the Cuban population, raising fears that they may face U.S. intervention similar to recent actions in Iran, where military operations resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Notably, both Trump and Rubio have previously advocated for regime change in Havana.
