The CSR Journal Magazine

In a shocking incident, Y Puran Kumar, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer serving as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) in Haryana, was found dead at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, on Tuesday. Authorities believe he died by suicide after allegedly shooting himself with his service revolver.

The incident took place in the soundproof basement of his private residence, where Kumar reportedly instructed all his security personnel to leave before taking his own life. He is said to have been seated on a chair when he fired the fatal shot.

Chandigarh Police were alerted around 1:30 pm, with multiple teams including forensic experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) dispatched to the scene. The firearm used in the incident has been recovered, and the site is under forensic examination.

Shooting Confirmed at ADGP’s Home

Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur, who was present at the scene, confirmed,“We got information of a shooting at around 1:30 PM at Sector 11 Police Station. When we reached here, we found that a reported suicide had taken place. The body of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar was found at his residence.”
“The CFSL team has reached the spot, and an investigation is underway. More details will be known after the post-mortem.”

The body was shifted to Sector 16 Government Hospital for post-mortem. Meanwhile, police officials have started questioning individuals who were present in the building at the time to gather details about what may have led to the incident.

At the time of Kumar’s death, his wife Amneet P Kumar, a senior IAS officer, was abroad on official duty in Japan, part of a delegation led by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. She is expected to return to India by Wednesday evening, sources confirmed.

Kumar Takes Charge at Rohtak PTC

Kumar, a 2001-batch officer of the Haryana cadre, had recently taken charge at the Police Training Centre (PTC) in Sunaria, Rohtak, following a transfer from his previous posting as ADGP, Rohtak Range, on September 25.

Known for his disciplined service record, Kumar was an engineering graduate born on May 19, 1973, and was scheduled to retire in May 2033. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves through both the police and administrative circles.

One of the investigating officials said,“He shot himself at his private residence. He died on the spot.”

Although no suicide note has been found, authorities are carefully examining the possible reasons behind his extreme step. The investigation remains active, and the final cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received.
