The Sun’s Incredible Volume: Equivalent to Quintillions of Jet Engines

At 290 decibels, one would likely become deaf, while the associated shockwave could be fatal.

The principle reason we do not hear the Sun is rooted in the nature of sound itself. Sound is a vibration that requires a medium—such as air, water, or solid materials—to transmit. Between the Earth and the Sun lies approximately 150 million kilometers of near-perfect vacuum. This lack of a transmitting medium effectively cancels out any potential sound.

Detecting Solar Sounds Through Helioseismology

Despite the absence of audible sound reaching Earth, scientists can still study the Sun’s vibrations through a specialized field known as helioseismology. Researchers utilize instruments designed to detect pressure waves on the Sun’s surface. These solar vibrations can then be converted into audio formats. When slowed to frequencies within the human audible range, the result is an uncanny, resonant hum that resembles a cross between a musical organ and distant thunder.
