Swara Bhasker Recounts Unsettling Experience With Director

The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor Swara Bhasker recently shared a disconcerting experience from the early stages of her career, shortly after the success of her film Tanu Weds Manu. During an episode of Rise & Fall Season 2, she relayed how a director allegedly made her uncomfortable by insisting they rehearse a romantic scene in private. Her revelations shed light on the pressures and vulnerabilities young actors often face in the film industry.

Inappropriate Requests and Behaviour

Swara recounted that while working on what she described as her “big lead film,” the director began sending her unsolicited personal messages. He reportedly emphasised that a director should have affection for their actors and would send them poetry. This behaviour escalated when it came time to rehearse a romantic scene, during which Swara felt uneasy about being alone with the man. When she asked about who else would be present, the director specified it would just be the two of them, prompting her to insist that others, including the cameraperson, should be involved in order to make the rehearsal appropriate.

Later, upon arriving at a guest house where she was staying, she encountered the director and cinematographer drinking together. Swara expressed concern about why she should be expected to rehearse in the presence of two intoxicated men, given her age and the power dynamics at play. She alluded to the discomfort of being a young woman in her early twenties in such a situation and decided to leave in haste, stating, “I just ran from there somehow.”

Swara’s unsettling experience did not conclude there; she detailed an incident that occurred later that night. Allegedly, the director knocked on her room door, and she feared he might force it open. Once she finally opened the door, she described him as visibly drunk, asking her, “Can I get a hug?” Swara firmly declined, expressing her fear and discomfort by saying, “Sir, please go. I am scared.”

Concerns Over Power Imbalance in the Industry

During her conversation with fellow contestants, including Tej Pratap Yadav and Priyanka Chahar Chaudhary, Swara also touched upon the significant power imbalance prevalent in the industry. She pointed out that the director’s position of authority made the situation all the more troubling. Both Tej and Priyanka reportedly reacted with outrage, expressing a desire to confront the director. Their responses highlighted shared concerns regarding the treatment of young actors in an environment where those in power can exploit their influence.

Swara’s account serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by up-and-coming talent in the film industry, where the boundaries of professionalism can sometimes blur. Her experience emphasizes the importance of addressing such issues to foster a safer and more equitable working environment for all individuals involved in filmmaking.

The conversation ultimately underscored the necessity for ongoing discussions about consent and respect within the creative industries. As more individuals speak out about their experiences, it becomes increasingly apparent that awareness and change are crucial to protect aspiring actors and creatives.
