SpiceJet Maintains Operations Despite Airspace Ban by Bangladesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

SpiceJet airline has confirmed that its operations remain uninterrupted following the recent decision by Bangladesh to restrict the airline’s use of its airspace due to unpaid dues. The Bangladeshi authorities stated that the ban was imposed in light of outstanding payments owed by the airline.

In a statement addressing these developments, SpiceJet noted that it is actively communicating with the relevant authorities to clarify operational and procedural issues including navigation-related charges. The airline emphasized that such challenges are common in the aviation industry and expressed optimism about achieving a swift resolution. According to SpiceJet, its scheduled services continue in compliance with regulatory standards.

Induction of New Aircraft Marks Fleet Expansion

In parallel with addressing the airspace issue, SpiceJet has made significant strides in expanding its fleet. The airline recently secured a Memorandum of Understanding for the addition of 10 new aircraft, which is a crucial step forward in its efforts to enhance capacity and rebuild its network. This move follows the board’s prior approval for a gradual increase in the fleet size to 60 aircraft, which will be accomplished through a combination of wet and dry leases as well as the phased reactivation of existing grounded planes.

Significant Capacity Growth Reported

SpiceJet’s recovery trajectory has been notably strong in recent months. The airline reported a twofold increase in capacity over the past quarter, with Available Seat Kilometres (ASKMs) soaring from approximately 55 crore to 105 crore, indicative of a robust improvement in network operations. Capitalizing on this upward momentum, SpiceJet aims to more than double its capacity within the year, targeting an impressive 220 crore Available Seat Kilometres by Winter 2026, while simultaneously operating over 300 flights daily across its network. This strategy is designed to enhance connectivity, bolster operational reliability, and meet surging passenger demand while adhering to a disciplined and sustainable growth model.

Comments from SpiceJet Leadership on Future Plans

Debojo Maharshi, the Chief Business Officer of SpiceJet, described the capacity doubling in the last quarter as a key achievement for the airline. He highlighted that the ongoing plans to further increase capacity this year reflect a growing confidence in the airline’s business prospects and the high demand observed across its operational network. Maharshi expressed optimism about the recent MoU, viewing it as a positive development in the airline’s concerted efforts to rebuild and expand operations thoughtfully. He reiterated the commitment to restoring capacity, enhancing connectivity, and improving service reliability for passengers.
