NCP Merger Discussions Held Between Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil, Says Sharad Pawar

Senior leader and founder of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Sharad Pawar, on Wednesday stated that internal discussions regarding a possible merger between the two factions of the NCP had taken place between Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil. Addressing the media, Pawar clarified that the dialogue pertaining to the party’s future was confined to leaders within the NCP and did not involve any external authorities.

Statement Aimed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

Sharad Pawar specifically dismissed comments made by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding the reported merger. Pawar said that Fadnavis had no right to comment on the internal affairs of the NCP. He emphasised that issues related to NCP’s organisational matters must be handled within the party and should not be influenced or guided by leaders belonging to other political entities.

Background: Split Within the NCP

The Nationalist Congress Party witnessed a significant split in July 2023, when Ajit Pawar led a group of NCP MLAs and joined the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government, which also includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Following the split, the Election Commission of India recognised the Ajit Pawar faction as the official NCP and granted it the party name and symbol.

On the other side, the faction led by Sharad Pawar continues to operate separately and has retained support among a section of party members and leaders, including senior figure Jayant Patil. Disputes over party legitimacy, control, and future political alignment have remained ongoing since the division.

Pawar Reiterates Autonomy of Party Decisions

Addressing the possible merger of both NCP factions, Sharad Pawar stressed that any important decision regarding the party would be taken after due deliberation among its leaders. He added that the party’s internal mechanisms would decide the future course of action, and that comments or observations by leaders from other parties had no place in this process.

Pawar’s response came after recent remarks by Devendra Fadnavis, who reportedly suggested that talks were progressing regarding a potential reunification of the two NCP groups. Pawar dismissed such remarks as unnecessary and outside the jurisdiction of Fadnavis.

Political Context Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections

Discussions around party mergers and alliances have gained momentum in Maharashtra, with the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approaching. Multiple realignments have taken place in the state’s politics over the past year, affecting the Shiv Sena, NCP, and other opposition formations.

Amid these developments, the statements by Sharad Pawar underline the NCP founder’s intent to maintain control over decisions concerning the faction led by him. The dynamics between the two groups of the NCP and their respective roles in upcoming electoral strategies are expected to shape Maharashtra’s political scenario in the near term.
