Shaolin Temple Rocked by Scandal as Chief Monk Faces Serious Misconduct Charges

The CSR Journal Magazine

Shi Yongxin, the long-serving head of the world-famous Shaolin Temple, is now the subject of a formal investigation by multiple Chinese authorities. The probe accuses him of embezzling temple funds and violating monastic codes through alleged long-term, improper relationships and illegitimate offspring.

Investigation and Allegations

In an official notice posted on the temple’s website and shared on WeChat, authorities said Shi is suspected of misappropriating project finance and temple property. The same announcement added that he had “seriously violated Buddhist precepts by maintaining improper relationships with multiple women over a long period and fathering illegitimate children.”

China Daily reports that several government agencies are coordinating the ongoing investigation, and the temple has pledged to provide updates as the inquiry continues.

Background and Previous Controversies

Shi Yongxin, born Liu Yingcheng, became a Shaolin disciple in 1981 and assumed leadership in 1999. He’s often dubbed the “CEO monk” for transforming the temple into a global brand—organising kung fu tours, operating Shaolin schools abroad, and launching merchandise lines.

Despite these innovations, Shi has repeatedly faced serious criticism. Media reports allege he once accepted luxury offerings—a Volkswagen SUV and a robe woven with gold thread—and misused temple funds, though a 2016 provincial investigation ultimately dismissed the charges.

And when pressed by BBC Chinese in 2015, he dismissed the accusations, saying: “If there were a problem, it would have surfaced long ago.”

Institutional Response and Social Impact

As news of the investigation broke, Shi became a trending topic on Weibo and a top search on Baidu. His personal Weibo account—with over 880,000 followers—has remained dormant since July 24.

In addition, the Buddhist Association of China has revoked his ordination certificate, stating: “Shi Yongxin’s actions are extremely bad, seriously damaging the reputation of the Buddhist community and the image of monks.”

Temple Legacy and Criticism

Founded in 495 AD at the foothills of Song Mountain, Shaolin Temple is recognised globally for its profound heritage in Zen Buddhism and martial arts. It attracts religious seekers and kung fu students from across the globe, and its cultural influence spans film, television, video games, and even international music collaborations.

In recent years, some former monks and observers have criticised Shi’s business-oriented approach, citing proposals for a $300 million complex blending hospitality, training, and tourism as signs of excessive commercialisation. Many worry that this shift undermines the temple’s spiritual mission.

What Comes Next

While Shi has remained silent since the probe opened, the revelations have reignited scrutiny over his leadership and the temple’s modern trajectory. As the investigation proceeds, further statements from both authorities and temple officials are anticipated to clarify the extent of the allegations.
