On Monday, the Supreme Court of India disposed of the plea of Gitanjali J Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. The plea challenged Wangchuk’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA). The bench comprising of Justices Aravind Kumar and PB Varale while hearing the matter on Monday said Centre had already revoked the detention order on March 14 and so there is “nothing remained in the matter”. Earlier the apex court had asked the Supreme Court to review Wangchuk’s detention as he was unwell.

Centre withdraws detention months after violent protests in Ladakh

After six months of detention, Wangchuk’s detention was revoked on March 14, with immediate effect. He was arrested two days after a protest in Ladakh turned violent, leaving four dead and 45 injured, including 22 policemen. The protest was regarding the demand for statehood and inclusion of the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Upon release Wangchuk spoke to the media and called this as a “positive step,” adding that he is hopeful that constructive talks can happen now over Ladakh’s status. He added that the movement would remain peaceful. Wangchuk said that a “lot went wrong”, however, it was time to focus on rectifying the mistakes that happened in the past. Wangchuk has requested Centre to release others who are still facing legal action because of the protest.

Wangchuk welcomed by the well-wishers and fans

A grand welcome was organsied at the Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport on March 22 by the members of Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). He addressed his well-wishers and said that he is hopeful that the movement remains peaceful. He even noted that he is planning to meet the family members of the deceased protestors and pay his respects.
