Saudi Arabia Achieves Significant Land Restoration and Tree Planting under Green Initiative

The CSR Journal Magazine

Saudi Arabia has achieved a significant environmental milestone by restoring one million hectares of degraded land and planting over 159 million trees. This initiative marks an important step forward in the nation’s ongoing efforts to combat desertification and enhance vegetation cover. Initiated in 2021 by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi Green Initiative aims to plant a total of 10 billion trees and rehabilitate approximately 40 million hectares across the Kingdom.

Abdulrahman Alfadley, the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, emphasized that this achievement showcases the leadership’s commitment to environmental sustainability as part of Saudi Vision 2030. The restoration efforts initiated with a modest 18,000 hectares have now expanded significantly, reaching 250,000 hectares by 2024 and achieving the one-million-hectare goal by early 2026.

Alfadley highlighted the collaborative nature of this success, attributing it to the efforts of various government entities, the private sector, and local communities. The initiative plays a critical role in preserving biodiversity and promoting native plant species. He mentioned that efforts such as the establishment of royal reserves and the implementation of modern water harvesting techniques are crucial for sustainable land restoration.

Future Ambitions and Water Management Projects

The current accomplishments set the groundwork for the next target of restoring 2.5 million hectares by 2030. To support this objective, projects focused on dam water utilization and rainwater harvesting are being prioritized, which are anticipated to enhance the ongoing expansion of green cover in the region.

Vice Minister Eng. Mansour Almushaiti described the restoration achievement as a “qualitative leap” towards achieving the Kingdom’s ambitious environmental goals. He stated that this milestone closely aligns with the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative, particularly in terms of planting 10 billion trees and rehabilitating 40 million hectares of land. He also mentioned specialized programs like the National Cloud Seeding Program, which has successfully increased rainfall and reduced dust storm occurrences by 50 percent in 2025 compared to the previous year.

International Recognition for Restoration Efforts

Saudi Arabia’s environmental efforts have garnered international praise. Dr. Yasmine Fouad, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, acknowledged the Kingdom’s integrated approach and political commitment to land restoration. She remarked on the significance of this achievement, asserting that it demonstrates that land restoration is feasible even in some of the most challenging environments. Dr. Fouad also noted the Kingdom’s contributions towards fostering international cooperation on land restoration through initiatives such as the Middle East Green Initiative and its role in hosting COP16 of the UNCCD.
