Samsung Discontinues Galaxy Z TriFold Just Three Months After Launch

The CSR Journal Magazine

Samsung Electronics has decided to halt production of the Galaxy Z TriFold, a move that comes only three months post-launch. The company is initially ceasing sales in South Korea, with plans to follow suit in the United States once existing inventory is depleted. This triple-folding smartphone was introduced in limited markets due to its high price point. Samsung described the device as a demonstration of its engineering prowess rather than a product intended for mass-market consumption.

Pricing and Market Limitations

The Galaxy Z TriFold was launched at a staggering price of $2,899 in the US, equivalent to approximately Rs 2,68,100, which restricted its accessibility to a small demographic of affluent consumers and technology enthusiasts. This pricing strategy resulted in the device being perceived as a niche product despite the initial interest generated by its innovative design. The TriFold was exclusively available through Samsung’s stores and website.

Manufacturing Challenges Cited

Samsung’s decision to discontinue the Galaxy Z TriFold aligns with recent updates on its website that have indicated a lack of future restocks, with the product currently listed as “sold out.” Reports suggest that the primary reason for discontinuation lies in the complexities and costs associated with its manufacturing process. Producing the intricate triple-folding design involves sophisticated hinges and high-end components, which have been further challenged by rising memory costs and geopolitical factors.

No Immediate Successor Planned

In a recent statement, Won-Joon Choi, Chief Operating Officer of Samsung’s Mobile Experience Business, indicated that the company has not yet determined if a successor to the TriFold will be developed, highlighting the difficulties involved in its production. At present, there are no official announcements regarding plans for a follow-up model. With the existing stock dwindling and no clear successor on the horizon, the Galaxy Z TriFold seems to be approaching the conclusion of its market presence.

Specifications of the Galaxy Z TriFold

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold features a distinctive triple-fold design supported by dual hinges, enabling users to unfold it into a tablet-like display measuring 10 inches diagonally. The device boasts an LTPO AMOLED panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz and a peak brightness of 1,600 nits. It is equipped with a robust 5,600mAh Li-ion battery that offers 45W wired charging capabilities, all contained in a 309-gram chassis. Powering the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. On the imaging front, it features a trio of rear cameras, including a 200MP primary sensor, a 10MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultrawide lens, alongside a 10MP front-facing camera designed for selfies and video conferencing.
