External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that India will firmly exercise its right to defend itself against terrorism during his address to the UN General Assembly on Saturday. He underscored that the principles of friendship and goodwill cannot coexist with the threat of terrorism. Jaishankar’s remarks were notably directed at Pakistan in response to its previous allegations presented at the UN.

During his speech, Jaishankar characterised Pakistan as a “serial practitioner of terrorism” that distorted facts in its statements. He expressed concern over attempts to normalise terrorism while seeking immunity from its repercussions. His comments were made while delivering India’s national statement at the 81st session’s General Debate, asserting that India would respond vigorously to terrorist activities.

Jaishankar’s declaration of India’s self-defence rights was clear. He remarked, “It is for the perpetrator of terrorism to mend its ways,” emphasising that the nation would not stand by in the face of ongoing threats. He reiterated the need for accountability in relation to state-sponsored terrorism and called for a disciplined approach towards addressing financial networks sustaining such activities.

Challenges to Global Peace and Development

Jaishankar also highlighted the persistent threat of terrorism as a significant challenge to global peace. He noted that terrorism, especially when supported by states for cross-border purposes, undermines international stability. He called for governments engaging in such practices to be held accountable, advocating for an unwavering stance against terrorism.

The Minister remarked that financial dimensions of terrorism should be scrutinised and countered to maintain a solid resolve in the fight against this menace. Earlier, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had referenced historical interventions in conflicts, including crediting US President Donald Trump during his speech. Jaishankar countered by stating that India would not allow third-party involvement in its affairs.

While addressing broader international cooperation, he stressed the importance of reformed multilateralism. Jaishankar stated that India is dedicated to exploring pathways that encourage collective peace, development, and prosperity. He articulated that these aspirations cannot merely be imposed but should instead stem from a shared commitment to address global challenges.

India’s Commitment to Global Responsibilities

In his address, Jaishankar highlighted India’s role as a first responder in humanitarian crises. He mentioned India’s history of providing aid during natural disasters and conflicts, reflecting the nation’s contributions to the welfare of the Global South. He stated, “As a first responder, we were there early,” referring to responses to incidents such as the Nepal flash floods and the Venezuela earthquake.

Jaishankar pointed out that India has continuously shared its resources to meet the needs of food, energy, and medical supplies in affected regions. He emphasised the importance of India’s development partnerships, particularly through capacity-building and knowledge-sharing initiatives in Africa and other regions.

Touching on the topic of artificial intelligence, he noted its potential for fostering growth and tackling significant challenges globally. He expressed India’s commitment to collaborating on AI initiatives while respecting each nation’s right to define its technological governance according to its priorities.

In conclusion, Jaishankar underscored the importance of promoting international understanding in a globalised world, highlighting the need for a cultural rebalancing alongside economic and political shifts. His address presented a blend of warning against terrorism and calls for collaborative efforts towards global peace and reform.
