Road in Delhi to be Named After Bodo Leader Upendra Nath Brahma

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is planning to rename a stretch of Lala Lajpat Rai Marg in South Delhi to Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Marg after the prominent Bodo leader and social activist.. The renamed section of the 35-m wide road near Kailash Colony Metro Station crosses the Bodo Guest House.

According to a notice dated April 3 by the MCD South zone, “Naming of the road from Lala Lajpat Rai Marg near Kailash colony Metro Station (A-18, Kailash colony) to Lala Lajpat Rai Marg (near A-5/A-6) Kailash colony as Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Marg has been approved in anticipation of the cooperation’s final nod.” the notice was passed following directives from the ministry of Home Affairs.

Next year, Assam is going to hold state polls, while this September, the state will witness local elections of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). This move by the BJP-led government in Delhi is being seen as a part of a broader political strategy ahead of the Assam polls between March and April 2026. In the 2021 elections, the BJP had already secured a majority after winning 64 out of 126 assembly seats in the state.

Assam has a total tribal population of 12%, of which the Bodo community makes up 35%. This makes the community, concentrated in the Bodo territorial region (BTR), a critical voting bloc.

Who Was Bodofa

Upendra Nath Brahma is called Bodofa, which literally translates to ‘father or guardian of the Bodo’. He served as the President of the Bodo student union and dedicated much of his life to uplifting and educating the Bodo community. He passed away at a young age of 34 after being affected by cancer in 1990.
