“Makes Me Uncomfortable”: Rishab Shetty Breaks Silence On Ranveer Singh’s Kantara Mimicry

The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty has finally addressed the controversy surrounding Ranveer Singh’s imitation of the Daiva ritual from Kantara during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. While Shetty did not mention Ranveer by name, his remarks clearly came in response to the widespread backlash triggered by the viral video.

“It Makes Me Uncomfortable,” Says Shetty

Speaking at a Behindwoods event in Chennai, Rishab Shetty expressed discomfort over sacred traditions being reenacted or mimicked on public stages. He emphasised that while Kantara is a cinematic work, the Daiva Bhoota Kola ritual depicted in the film holds deep spiritual significance.

“That makes me uncomfortable. The Daiva element is sensitive and sacred. Wherever I go, I request people not to perform it on stage or mock it. It is emotionally deeply connected to us,” Shetty said.

Authenticity at the Core of Kantara

Shetty also highlighted the extensive research and cultural sensitivity that went into making Kantara: Chapter 1. He explained that the team took special care to portray local customs and rituals authentically so audiences could understand their true meaning rather than view them as mere entertainment.

According to him, the intent behind showcasing such traditions was to educate viewers about their importance and preserve their cultural essence, not to turn them into performative spectacles.

What Triggered the Backlash

The controversy erupted after Ranveer Singh, while speaking at IFFI on November 30, enthusiastically recalled watching Kantara in theatres and went on to imitate the Daiva scene on stage. The act quickly went viral and drew sharp criticism online, with many users accusing the actor of being insensitive to religious sentiments.

Several social media users called for boycotts of Ranveer’s upcoming projects and objected to his suggestion that audiences would like to see him in a future Kantara instalment.

Ranveer Singh Issues Apology

Following the backlash, Ranveer Singh issued a public apology on Instagram. He clarified that his intention was to praise Rishab Shetty’s performance and not to offend any beliefs.

“I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition, and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise,” Ranveer wrote. He added that he admired the effort and discipline required to perform the Daiva sequence.

Despite the controversy, Ranveer’s latest film Dhurandhar continues to perform strongly at the box office.
