Retired Brigadier Killed by Stray Bullet During Violent Clash in Dehradun

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 70-year-old retired Army brigadier was fatally struck by a stray bullet while taking his morning walk in Dehradun on Monday. The incident occurred around 6:30 am near a cooperative bank, following a late-night altercation over DJ music at a local nightclub that escalated into street violence. The retired Brigadier, VK Joshi, was caught in the crossfire between two groups engaged in a gunfight as they chased each other in vehicles. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the conflict originated from a disagreement that unfolded inside the “Gen Z Club” earlier that night.

Details of the Clash

CCTV footage revealed that the two groups pursued each other before opening fire indiscriminately. In the midst of the chaos, one of the bullets struck Brigadier Joshi, resulting in his immediate death on the scene. Following the shooting, both vehicles involved fled the area, but later, a Toyota Fortuner crashed near a primary school. Despite the crash, the fighting between the groups persisted. Witnesses emphasized that the violence was not a case of road rage but was tied to the DJ music dispute at the nightclub, which was allegedly operating beyond its permitted hours.

Regulatory Response

The state excise department has taken action by issuing a notice to the nightclub for allegedly violating operating hours. There are growing concerns regarding the enforcement of regulations relating to nightlife in the area, especially regarding how the club was allowed to operate late into the night. Preliminary investigations have raised questions about the establishment’s compliance with safety standards, including fire safety clearance and the validity of its excise license.

Ongoing Investigation

In connection with the incident, law enforcement authorities have identified a Scorpio vehicle involved in the clash, and the shooter remains at large. A manhunt has been initiated, with police setting up checkpoints and conducting searches in various neighborhoods to locate the suspects. The tragic loss of Brigadier Joshi has left behind his wife, a daughter, and a son, all residing outside Dehradun. The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigations are in progress as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
