On October 6, 2026, President Droupadi Murmu awarded degrees to the graduating students of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bilaspur during its inaugural convocation. This event represents an important milestone in the Institute’s development and its contributions to medical education and healthcare in India.

In her address, President Murmu praised the first graduating class, including gold medallists, along with their parents and teachers for their support throughout the academic journey. She emphasised the special role that this inaugural group would play in establishing the identity and legacy of AIIMS Bilaspur.

The President urged graduates to uphold the Institution’s reputation through their conduct and dedication, reminding them of their vital responsibility towards humanity as medical professionals.

Calls for Compassion and Community Service in Healthcare

During her speech, the President highlighted the importance of prioritising the needs of individuals, particularly those in remote and underserved regions with limited access to advanced healthcare services. She encouraged both the graduates and the Institute to enhance tertiary healthcare in the area through initiatives like telemedicine and expert consultations.

President Murmu also referred to the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, which aims to alleviate the financial burden of healthcare for economically vulnerable families. She noted that over ₹2 lakh crore has been spent on treatments under this scheme, stressing that it is crucial for stakeholders to ensure that information about such health protection measures reaches people in distant locations.

She advised that prestigious institutions like AIIMS must endeavour to contribute to the development of accessible and affordable healthcare solutions for all. Additionally, she encouraged graduates to be lifelong learners, adapting to the evolving landscape of medical practices and innovations that can enhance patient care.

Speeches by Dignitaries Emphasise Growth and Responsibility

Governor of Himachal Pradesh Kavinder Gupta commended the graduates for their achievements and acknowledged AIIMS Bilaspur’s role in providing specialised healthcare to the region. He quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks regarding the substantial contributions of AIIMS to medical education and research, highlighting the positive impact on the healthcare sector in Himachal Pradesh.

Furthermore, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare JP Nadda shared his pride in witnessing the completion of the inaugural batch’s academic journey. He noted the significant increase in the number of medical colleges and undergraduate seats across the country, emphasising the government’s commitment to expand medical education by adding 75,000 seats by 2029.

Nadda also pointed out the remarkable growth of AIIMS Bilaspur, which has surpassed its initial target of 750 beds and is currently functioning with 776 beds and numerous specialities. He underscored the significant number of outpatient and inpatient admissions the Institute has recorded, reflecting its capability to cater to healthcare needs.

In his address, he encouraged graduates to uphold the values of excellence and service that AIIMS represents and expressed confidence that their contributions would elevate the Institute’s status to that of leading healthcare centres in India.

Institution’s Progress and Future Prospects

Since its establishment, AIIMS Bilaspur has grown significantly, highlighted by over 3 lakh outpatient consultations and numerous surgical procedures completed within its first few operational years. These accomplishments signal the Institute’s advancing role in both medical education and healthcare provision in the region.
