A powerful nor’easter struck the US East Coast over the weekend, decisively affecting areas from Washington, D.C., to Maine. The storm caused extensive disruptions to air travel, with hundreds of flights cancelled and thousands delayed. Additionally, the weather event resulted in widespread power outages, impacting numerous homes and businesses.

As of 1:07 p.m. ET on Saturday, over 88,000 utility customers were reportedly without electricity in states including New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania. This number represented a decrease from earlier reports, where outages had exceeded 119,000. Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York each accounted for more than 25,000 affected customers shortly after the midday hour.

PSEG Long Island reported that approximately 13,300 of its customers remained powerless as of Saturday afternoon due to the storm’s destruction of trees, branches, and power lines. The utility company noted that it had successfully restored service to more than 34,600 customers since Friday morning.

Emergency Declarations Across Affected States

In response to the nor’easter, several governors declared states of emergency. On Friday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy took this step in anticipation of the storm’s severe impact on their regions, particularly in New York City. These declarations aim to facilitate a swift response to the unfolding situation.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont also activated the state’s Emergency Operations Center as part of the preparatory measures for any further repercussions from the storm. The officials are working closely with local and state organisations to manage the emergency effectively and ensure public safety.

The US National Weather Service issued warnings that the nor’easter would generate dangerous coastal flooding, aggressive rip currents, and heavy winds along with substantial rainfall across the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions through Monday, emphasizing the ongoing threat posed by the storm.

Impact on Air Travel and Infrastructure

The storm’s influence extended to several US airports, where significant disruptions were reported on Saturday. According to FlightAware, about 425 flights were cancelled, while 1,338 faced delays. These cancellations and delays affected numerous airlines and travellers across various major airports in the region.

Airlines and airport authorities worked throughout the day to inform passengers and minimise disruption where possible. Should the storm’s forecasted impacts persist, further disruptions to air travel may be anticipated in the coming days.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely, providing updates to the public about potential hazards and the status of recovery efforts. Utility companies are also prioritising restoring power to the communities affected by the outages as quickly as possible.
