The CSR Journal Magazine

On September 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh on his 119th birth anniversary, describing him as a “source of inspiration for every Indian,” especially for the youth. In a video message posted on X, the Prime Minister acknowledged Bhagat Singh’s bravery and steadfast dedication to India’s struggle for independence, noting that his life and sacrifice remain inspirational across generations.

PM Modi characterised Bhagat Singh as a symbol of fearlessness, stating that these qualities were intrinsic to his character. He highlighted the significance of Bhagat Singh’s courage as an example for today’s youth, emphasising that his contributions to the freedom movement continue to motivate people in contemporary society.

Reflection on Bhagat Singh’s Courage

In his homage, PM Modi recalled an impactful letter written by Bhagat Singh to the British authorities prior to his execution. In this correspondence, Singh requested that he and his fellow comrades be regarded as prisoners of war rather than common criminals. He contended that they should face execution by firing squad instead of hanging, an assertion PM Modi described as a testament to Singh’s remarkable bravery.

The Prime Minister further remarked on Bhagat Singh’s empathetic nature and his commitment to alleviating the suffering of others. He stated that Bhagat Singh was deeply sensitised to the struggles of the public, consistently putting himself at the forefront of efforts to assist those in distress. In this context, PM Modi expressed his heartfelt tribute to the revered revolutionary.

In a separate message on the same platform, he reiterated that Bhagat Singh’s unyielding courage and valour revitalised India’s freedom movement. He remarked on the profound significance of Singh’s resolve to sacrifice everything for the nation’s honour, describing this spirit as emblematic of the courage and determination found in India’s youth today.

Bhagat Singh’s Contributions to the Freedom Struggle

Born on September 28, 1907, in Banga, now situated in present-day Pakistan’s Punjab province, Bhagat Singh emerged as one of the most notable revolutionaries in India’s quest for independence. His actions, particularly during the early 20th century, significantly impacted the trajectory of the freedom struggle against colonial-ruled India.

One of his notable protests occurred on April 8, 1929, when Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw bombs inside the Central Legislative Assembly in New Delhi. This act was intended as a statement against oppressive British legislation. Following the incident, both revolutionaries voluntarily surrendered, seeking to utilise the ensuing legal process as a platform for their anti-colonial message.

Bhagat Singh’s life was tragically cut short when he was convicted in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. He was executed at the young age of 23, alongside his associates Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar on March 23, 1931. Despite his early death, Bhagat Singh’s ideals and sacrifices have continued to resonate, making him an enduring figure in India’s history.

Tributes from Political Leaders

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also commemorated Bhagat Singh, encouraging citizens, particularly youth, to engage in constructive efforts to build a knowledgeable and capable Uttar Pradesh. He urged that the example set by Bhagat Singh should inspire individuals to combat social injustices.

In his address, Yogi emphasized the necessity of knowledge, skills, determination, and action in fostering the development of the state. He urged the youth to draw lessons from Bhagat Singh’s life, encouraging them to contribute positively to society by fighting against social evils.
