Opposition Voices Concerns Over Jantar Mantar Protest Relocation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent shift of protest sites in Delhi has brought Jantar Mantar out of the spotlight, leading to opposition parties questioning the government’s motives. Historically, Jantar Mantar has served as a significant platform for demonstrations, located just a short distance from the Parliament. It enabled small protests to gain significant attention. However, the Delhi Police announced that it will no longer serve as a designated protest area, citing the need to manage traffic and maintain order in central Delhi.

In recent weeks, central Delhi has witnessed substantial demonstrations led by opposition parties, particularly targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. On October 10, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) called for a renewed campaign at Jantar Mantar, leading to heightened police presence and crackdowns. This escalation coincided with a decision two days later to denotify Jantar Mantar as an approved protest venue.

This move forms part of a broader political context as opposition leaders express frustrations over restrictions on public demonstrations. The implication is that these moves may hinder citizens’ ability to voice dissent, driving protests further from the corridors of power in Delhi.

Opposition Leaders React to Venue Changes

The opposition has raised important questions regarding the government’s decisions about protest locations. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has specifically highlighted the distance of the newly proposed sites from the heart of power. He contended in a tweet that this distance effectively segregates the government’s activities from public sentiment, stating that authorities wish to shield themselves from public discontent.

Yadav further suggested that a space for protests should have been designated closer to Lok Kalyan Marg, arguing that such a move would facilitate immediate attention to public concerns. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bhardwaj echoed this sentiment, asserting that the actions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah indicate a fear of youthful dissent.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh added a critical perspective on the government’s attitude towards democratic expressions, suggesting that it views public protests as problematic. The CJP founder reinforced that this decision will not quell dissent but may instead inspire broader movements across the nation.

Challenges Associated With New Protest Locations

Under the new arrangements, alternative protest sites present their own challenges. Ramlila Maidan, the nearest option at approximately 3 km from Jantar Mantar, requires a booking fee of Rs 50,000 per day along with security deposits, making it costly and less accessible. Additionally, the ground’s availability is frequently compromised due to cultural events, limiting opportunities for protests during peak periods.

On the other hand, CBD Ground in East Delhi is notably distant, located around 10-12 km away from central Delhi. It too faces obstacles due to its usual usage for private events and weddings, which complicates the logistics of holding protests. The final option, the Nirankari Ground in Burari, lies approximately 22 km from Jantar Mantar. While it can accommodate up to 1 lakh individuals, its location along a major highway raises concerns about attracting media attention and public interest.

The opposition argues that the current selection for protest sites fails to offer the visibility and impact that Jantar Mantar provided. Historical patterns suggest that as one site becomes restricted, new spaces emerge but often with even more limitations. This development has ignited concerns about the future of public dissent in proximity to government institutions.
