Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced that the National Conference (NC) will proceed with its sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. This protest is scheduled to coincide with the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. The aim of the demonstration is to remind the central government of its commitment to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

In statements made to reporters at an event, Abdullah affirmed that the plans for the protest remain unchanged. This announcement follows his recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 11, where he actively advocated for the “early return” of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. During the meeting, he also sought assistance from the Centre to hasten the region’s economic and infrastructural development.

Abdullah reiterated that his party remains steadfast in its commitment to the protest. He emphasised the significance of holding the sit-in as a means to remind the central authorities of their promises made in various forums, including the Supreme Court and Parliament. He noted that these assurances were made not only in legal settings but also during public discussions.

During the meeting with Prime Minister Modi, Abdullah highlighted several critical issues related to Jammu and Kashmir. He expressed particular concern regarding the financial condition of the Union Territory and underscored the urgency to expedite the development process in the region. Discussions centred around the challenges that the territory faces since the revocation of its special status in August 2019.
