Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has expressed his concerns regarding the functioning of the Election Commission of India following a report by the Indian Express. The report alleged that two Election Commissioners raised objections to decisions made during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Abdullah emphasised that these developments lead to numerous questions about the integrity and transparency of the Commission.

According to the report, Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised objections at least 14 times over the past ten months regarding decisions taken without their input. Abdullah stated that public trust in the electoral process is critical for the preservation of democracy. He alleged that the entire process appeared to be skewed in favour of a specific political entity and its associates.

In his remarks, Abdullah further questioned, “If this isn’t an attack on the Constitution, what is?” He highlighted that public confidence in the electoral process is vital, and any erosion of this trust threatens democratic values. Abdullah called for clarity on what corrective measures would be taken by the Election Commission.

Opposition’s Unified Stance

In light of the allegations directed towards the Election Commission, prominent opposition leaders have echoed Abdullah’s sentiments. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of orchestrating a “vote chori,” describing it as a severe infringement on democratic principles. Gandhi asserted that such actions constitute a crime against the Indian populace and threatened the Constitutional framework.

Gandhi took to the social media platform X to express his beliefs, referring to the alleged misconduct as treason against the nation. He stated, “Vote chori is a crime against the Indian people,” reinforcing the notion that the actions of the Election Commission warrant serious scrutiny and potential accountability.

In a video message, Gandhi admonished the Election Commission, asserting that its actions are detrimental to the integrity of the nation. His statements indicate a growing discontent among opposition parties regarding the election management and oversight in India.

Wider Criticism from Opposition Leaders

The critical view towards the Election Commission is shared by various opposition figures, including AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal and Shiv Sena UBT Chief Uddhav Thackeray. They, along with TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee and SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav, have raised concerns about the institution’s integrity. Collectively, these leaders have called for the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner, alleging that the current electoral governance poses a risk to the democratic structure of the country.
