Odisha Officials Successfully Rescue Elephant Trapped in Well Using Scientific Principle

The CSR Journal Magazine

A remarkable rescue operation took place in Banajodi, a densely populated area within the Sadar range of Keonjhar, Odisha. Officials utilized Archimedes’ principle to assist a male elephant that had fallen into a well. Videos capturing the dramatic efforts have gained significant attention on social media, showcasing the concerted actions of various authorities involved in the operation.

Coordinated Efforts of Rescue Teams

The rescue involved collaboration among multiple agencies, including the forest, fire, and police departments. This teamwork was crucial for ensuring the elephant’s safe retrieval from the functioning well. The divisional forest officer of Keonjhar shared videos of the operation, emphasizing the importance of the team’s cooperative approach in this challenging circumstance.

Application of Archimedes’ Principle

In order to facilitate the rescue, the teams decided to pump water into the well. This action raised the water level, creating an upward force on the elephant as per Archimedes’ principle, which states that an object submerged in a fluid experiences a buoyant force equivalent to the weight of the fluid it displaces. This scientifically backed method enabled rescuers to guide the elephant upwards more easily, considerably aiding the rescue operation.

Use of Equipment in the Rescue

After sufficiently raising the water level, a JCB machine was employed to assist in extracting the elephant from the well. The sizeable volume of the well ensured that the upward bouyant force was substantial enough to counterbalance the weight of the elephant. This clever application of a fundamental scientific premise played a pivotal role in the success of the operation and highlights the innovative methods employed by the rescue teams.

Positive Reaction from the Public

The ingenuity displayed during the rescue has led to a wave of appreciation from members of the public on social media platforms. Many users commended the coordinated efforts of the various departments and expressed admiration for the creative problem-solving that utilized a basic scientific principle. Indian Forest Service officer Ramesh Pandey also shared the videos, noting the effective application of Archimedes’ principle in facilitating the rescue.

Historical Context of Elephant Rescues

This is not the first instance where Archimedes’ principle has been instrumental in an elephant rescue operation. Six years prior, Ramesh Pandey had shared similar visuals of forest officials in Jharkhand successfully saving an elephant calf from a well using the same scientific principle. Such repeated instances underscore the innovative approaches being adopted in wildlife rescue efforts across India, emphasizing the potential for science to play a crucial role in animal conservation initiatives.
