Neutrogena Faces Backlash Following Hayden Panettiere’s Death

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hayden Panettiere passed away on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36. A police report indicates that her on-again, off-again partner, Brian Hickerson, along with his brother, was present at her South Carolina apartment when emergency services arrived. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her unexpected death is still active, and a formal cause of death has yet to be established.

Panettiere’s Relationship With Neutrogena

Panettiere maintained a significant association with the cosmetic brand Neutrogena, serving as a prominent ambassador from 2005 until 2015. This relationship is now under scrutiny due to recent events. After giving birth to her daughter, Kaya, in 2014, Panettiere openly discussed her struggles with postpartum depression, which became a topic of national conversation.

In a notable appearance on Live! with Kelly and Michael in 2015, she elaborated on her experience, emphasising the importance of discussing mental health openly. During this period, she was not only an actress but also the face of a major beauty organisation, making her disclosures particularly significant.

According to Panettiere, her candidness about her mental health led to tensions with Neutrogena. In her accounts, she stated that following her public discussion of postpartum depression, Neutrogena indicated they wished to terminate their partnership, citing a violation of a morality clause in her contract.

Revisiting Allegations Posthumously

Panettiere revisited these allegations in her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” which was published earlier in 2026, and during her appearance on Jay Shetty’s podcast. She expressed her shock at being informed that her mental health disclosures were grounds for severing her ties with the brand, something she had not anticipated after working with them for nearly a decade.

Despite her representative’s efforts to contest this decision, asserting that Neutrogena could not dismiss her for discussing a medical condition, the brand ultimately allowed her contract to fulfil its term without a renewal. It is essential to note that Neutrogena has not confirmed or denied these matters, and the narrative is primarily based on Panettiere’s perspectives.

The resurgence of this story has been prompted by the public’s reaction to her tragic death. As stories and clips resurfaced outlining Panettiere’s experiences with Neutrogena, the conversation extended beyond a mere celebrity endorsement, becoming intertwined with discussions about her struggles with postpartum depression and addiction.

Neutrogena’s Response to Public Outcry

Following the negative reception surrounding the allegations, Neutrogena released a statement addressing the controversy on Thursday. The company expressed deep sorrow over Panettiere’s passing and acknowledged her significance within the Neutrogena community throughout her decade-long partnership.

The statement read: “We are deeply saddened by Hayden Panettiere’s passing. For more than a decade, Hayden was a valued member of our Neutrogena community. We are proud to have partnered with her and understand that we made her feel unsupported during a very difficult time. This is not what Neutrogena stands for or who we want to be.”

The company further mentioned, “Hayden’s courage in sharing her challenges helped inspire important conversations and awareness. We are making a significant investment to a long-standing community health partner to help give more women access to the support they need, including care for postpartum depression.” However, this response has not fully quelled the online backlash, with many questioning why it took until after her death for the brand to address these issues.
