NDMC Empowers School Students with AI and Virtual Reality Skills in Pilot Workshop

The CSR Journal Magazine

Around 300 students from New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) schools recently had a unique opportunity to enhance their skills in storytelling, visual arts, and video creation through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. This was made possible during a three-day workshop titled “Aces of AI,” which concluded on Monday. The pilot project aimed to empower students of classes IX to XII by training them in 15 different AI tools alongside virtual reality gadgets, allowing them to unleash their creativity in unconventional ways.

Learning Through Technology and Creativity

During the workshop, students engaged hands-on with AI technologies to create various forms of digital content including AI-generated comics, lyrics, paintings, and digital books. These projects encouraged experiential learning and exposed them to future-forward tools that blend technology with artistic expression. Kritika Chaudhary, NDMC’s director of education, explained that all 42 NDMC schools participated by nominating students who showed an interest in this field. These students were then guided to participate in the workshop organised by Homi Lab, which is noted as India’s first Future-Skills Lab, designed to cultivate cutting-edge digital skills among young learners.

Bridging Educational Gaps with AI

Many of the participating students come from economically weaker backgrounds, making this initiative particularly impactful as it strives to make future-ready skills more accessible to all. Chaudhary highlighted ongoing efforts to conduct more such workshops with the goal of preparing students for future jobs in the evolving digital economy. The initiative serves as a platform to encourage unconventional learning methods, breaking away from traditional rote-based education and enabling students to gain practical competencies in AI and digital technologies.

An exhibition showcasing the AI-generated creative work of the students was organised at Navyug School in Sarojini Nagar. This event offered a space to celebrate the students’ achievements and demonstrated the practical outcomes of integrating AI into school learning environments.

Alignment with National Vision and Policy

The workshop and broader NDMC efforts received recognition from Kuljeet Singh Chahal, vice chairman of NDMC, who lauded the extensive training hours delivered – more than 6,000 hours in total. Students were introduced not only to AI fundamentals but also to advanced concepts such as machine learning, generative AI, and virtual reality labs. Chahal emphasised that these initiatives align closely with the National Education Policy 2020, which advocates for experiential learning and digital literacy as cornerstones of modern education.

He also noted how the programme supports India’s national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, underscoring the government’s commitment to future-ready education that equips young learners with the skills required to thrive in an increasingly digital world. By incorporating AI and experiential tools within its curriculum, NDMC aims to develop a generation that is both technologically skilled and creatively empowered.

This workshop marks a significant step in evolving school education by integrating AI literacy at an early stage and making it accessible across socio-economic backgrounds. It is a promising sign of how education institutions in India are embracing innovation to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
