NCERT Teams Up with IIT Madras for AI-Driven Curriculum

The CSR Journal Magazine

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has taken a major step towards integrating artificial intelligence into school education through its new partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). This collaboration aims to use cutting-edge AI tools and innovations to develop digital learning materials, create adaptive assessments, and make school education more inclusive, personalised, and effective. The move reflects India’s growing focus on equipping students with 21st-century skills and bridging the gap between traditional learning and emerging technologies.

Reimagining Learning Through AI

Under this partnership, the two institutions have agreed to jointly design AI-powered systems that can tailor learning experiences to suit the needs of each student. Through machine learning models and data analytics, the platforms will analyse how students understand subjects, identify knowledge gaps, and recommend ways to strengthen conceptual understanding.

IIT Madras, known for its expertise in AI and data science, will support NCERT in integrating these technologies with the National Digital Education Architecture and the National Curriculum Framework. The goal is to make digital learning more interactive and relevant for school children across the country.

Officials at NCERT have said that the new AI tools will be part of a broader plan to make textbooks, e-content, and teacher training more aligned with modern pedagogy. With this, teachers will be able to monitor student progress in real time, develop customised lesson plans, and guide each learner more effectively.

Building Scalable Educational Technologies

A major feature of the collaboration is the development of scalable AI-based platforms that can be used by millions of students in both rural and urban areas. IIT Madras will provide technical support through its Centre for Educational Technology and Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI. The project envisions the use of natural language processing tools to translate learning content into regional languages, strengthening the multilingual foundations of the Indian education system.

The teams will also work on predictive analytics systems that can anticipate learning difficulties among students and alert teachers before academic performance drops. Such innovations are expected to make the education system more proactive rather than reactive.

Additionally, the partnership will explore the use of AI-enabled chatbots and virtual tutors for self-paced learning. These systems will help students clarify doubts outside classroom hours, narrate lessons with examples, and maintain learning continuity even in remote settings.

Aligning with India’s Digital Education Vision

This initiative aligns closely with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasises using technology to personalise learning and promote digital literacy among students. The Ministry of Education has been encouraging collaborations like this to make India a global leader in digital education research and development.

AI integration is not only about improving learning outcomes but also about creating an equitable education system. Adaptive platforms developed through this project will ensure that learners from diverse backgrounds, including those in under-served areas, receive the same quality of education as their peers in urban schools. The partnership therefore represents both technological and social advancement.

In the longer term, NCERT and IIT Madras plan to open avenues for teacher training and academic research in AI-based education. They are also working towards a national repository of data-driven educational tools that can be shared with state boards and other educational institutions.
