More Than 50% of Healthy Young Indians Have Undetected Thyroid Issues: Study

The CSR Journal Magazine

On World Thyroid Day, Mahajan Imaging & Labs revealed concerning statistics regarding thyroid abnormalities among healthy young adults in India. The report, released during an expert webinar in New Delhi, highlights that 51.5% of the 321 participants showed abnormal thyroid ultrasound results. Notably, these individuals had no prior diagnoses or visible symptoms of thyroid disease.

The webinar gathered leading professionals in endocrinology and diagnostics to deliberate on rising thyroid dysfunction rates. They discussed factors contributing to delayed diagnoses and the importance of preventive screenings in younger populations facing lifestyle-related health risks.

Prevalence of Thyroid Disorders in India

Thyroid disorders rank among the most prevalent endocrine conditions in the country, affecting approximately 42 million people across India. Research indicates that nearly one in ten adults may suffer from hypothyroidism, and the incidence is notably higher among women, who are roughly ten times more likely to experience thyroid imbalances.

The observations from Mahajan Imaging & Labs emphasise the increasing rate of clinically silent thyroid issues, where individuals may have abnormal hormone levels or imaging results despite exhibiting no visible symptoms. Experts noted that these abnormalities can remain undetected, allowing conditions to develop further without intervention.

They highlighted that younger adults are particularly vulnerable, often facing chronic stress, irregular sleep patterns, sedentary behaviours, obesity, and poor dietary habits, all of which contribute to endocrine imbalances.

The Need for Enhanced Awareness and Screening

In a year-long analysis conducted by Mahajan Imaging & Labs from April 2025 to April 2026, data revealed that between 14% and 22% of thyroid blood tests returned abnormal results. This underscores the sustained presence of thyroid dysfunction among individuals undergoing routine screenings.

Symptoms traditionally associated with thyroid issues, such as fatigue, weight changes, hair loss, anxiety, poor sleep, mood swings, menstrual irregularities, and infertility, are frequently misattributed to lifestyle factors. Consequently, many individuals remain unaware of underlying thyroid conditions for extended periods.

Dr. Anoop Misra, Executive Chairman of Fortis C-DOC Hospital for Diabetes and Allied Sciences, addressed the alignment of rising endocrine disorders with diabetes and metabolic diseases, especially in younger demographics. He stressed the necessity for routine endocrine screenings and improved lifestyle practices to manage stress and seek medical advice promptly.

Dr. Harsh Mahajan, Founder and Chairman of Mahajan Imaging & Labs, expressed concern over the gradual and non-specific symptomatology of thyroid disorders. He reiterated the importance of preventive screening, particularly for women and individuals with a family history of thyroid disease and related conditions.

Dr. Shelly Mahajan, Lab Director at Mahajan Imaging & Labs, outlined how early identification of thyroid abnormalities through comprehensive evaluations, including imaging and laboratory tests, can significantly enhance patient outcomes. Timely awareness and testing are crucial, especially for young adults experiencing unexplained symptoms or metabolic issues.

Public Awareness and Future Directions

Experts at the webinar called for increased public education regarding thyroid health and emphasised the need for early intervention. They warned that many cases go undiagnosed for years due to the subtle initial presentation of symptoms.

Highlighting the specific risks faced by women during critical life stages, such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, specialists also noticed a rise in reported cases among young men. The call to action is clear: improved awareness and screening can significantly enhance quality of life and mitigate the long-term impacts of endocrine disorders within India’s growing population.
