Just a few hours after playing a match, Mizoram’s star cricketer K Lalremruata passed away. He had played in the Ranji Trophy for his state team and also represented them in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His life ended at the young age of 38.

Lalremruata was playing a match in Aizawl on Thursday, January 8. Lalremruata was representing Venghnuai Raiders CC when he suffered a sudden medical emergency while the match was in progress. During the game, he suddenly collapsed. It was later diagnosed that he had suffered a heart attack. Although he was immediately rushed to the hospital, his life could not be saved. Lalremruata breathed his last within a few hours.

Cricket Association of Mizoram issues statement

Lalremruata’s death has cast a shadow of grief over Mizoram cricket. The Cricket Association of Mizoram issued a statement expressing grief.

The social media statement reads, “A Tragic Loss for Mizoram Cricket. Today, 8 January, 2026 during the ongoing Khaled Memorial 2nd Division Screening Tournament, K. Lalremruata, a player for Venghnuai Raiders CC, passed away due to a stroke while playing. He represented Mizoram twice in the Ranji Trophy and seven times in the Syed Mustaq Ali Trophy. Lalremruata had been associated with Mizoram cricket for a long time. He played in the Ranji Trophy twice for the state team and participated in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy seven times. He was also closely associated with local clubs. Besides playing himself, Lalremruata also played an active role in nurturing talented cricketers for the future. Cases of cricketers suffering heart attack on field going up

Notably, the number of cricketers dying from heart attacks while playing has increased sharply recently. Just two months ago, in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, a bowler named Ahmer Khan collapsed on the field after bowling the last ball and winning the match for his team. He died on the field. The veteran bowler Ahmer Khan collapsed on the field shortly after bowling the final delivery of a match at the Bilari Sugar Mill Ground.

Moments after releasing the match-winning delivery, witnesses said Khan appeared to struggle with his breathing before sitting down on the pitch and collapsing. Teammates and a doctor present at the venue immediately rushed to his aid and began CPR. Though brief signs of response were seen, he was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Video footage from the ground reportedly captured the sudden collapse, shocking the crowd and halting what had moments earlier been a celebration of victory. Medical reports later confirmed that Khan suffered a heart attack while on the field.

In July, Harjit Singh of Punjab suffered a sudden heart attack after hitting a huge six. He too died on the field. Now, Lalremruata’s name has been added to this list of unfortunate cricketers.
