Ministry of Petroleum Doubles Allocation of 5 Kg LPG Cylinders for Migrant Labourers

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has announced that the daily allocation of 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders for migrant labourers will be doubled. This decision was communicated to the Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories in a recent letter. The increase in supply is based on the average number of cylinders distributed to migrant workers on March 2 and 3, 2026, exceeding the previously established limit of twenty per cent.

The additional cylinders will be managed by the respective State Governments and their Food or Civil Supplies Departments. These cylinders are earmarked exclusively for migrant labourers, with logistical support and distribution facilitated by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

Access to LPG for Vulnerable Populations

The government has taken significant steps to ensure that vulnerable groups such as migrant workers, students, and daily-wage earners can access the 5 kg FTL cylinders. Notably, these cylinders can now be obtained without requiring proof of address. Individuals can acquire them from authorised distributors by presenting a valid ID card.

Chandra Prakash, President of the All India LPG Distributors Federation, expressed support for this initiative, highlighting its benefits for those in need. He noted that vulnerable sections, including migrants who may lack a permanent address, can now receive cooking fuel without facing bureaucratic obstacles.

Prakash further explained that migrants facing challenges in cooking for their families can visit local LPG distributors with a valid ID and a self-declaration letter stating their residence in the area. This allows them to utilise the cylinder solely for cooking purposes. He emphasised that this facility is also available to migrant students and professionals who do not hold an existing LPG connection.

Public Response and Sales Performance

The initiative has reportedly seen a robust response from the public. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that over ninety thousand five-kilogram FTL cylinders were sold in a single day following the announcement. Since March 23, 2026, the total sales have reached approximately six hundred and sixty thousand cylinders across the country.

The Ministry has framed this action as part of a larger strategy to guarantee consistent availability of petroleum products and LPG throughout India, particularly in light of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Citizens have been advised to refrain from panic buying and to avoid unnecessary LPG bookings.

The government has encouraged the public to seek information only from official sources to prevent misinformation regarding LPG availability and distribution. This approach aims to maintain order during a time when demand for essential supplies may fluctuate due to external factors.
