In a significant bureaucratic shake-up ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India has appointed Siddh Nath Gupta as the new Director General of Police (DGP). He replaces Peeyush Pandey in this key position.

Furthermore, the Election Commission has designated Ajay Kumar Nand as the Commissioner of Kolkata Police. Natarajan Ramesh Babu has also been named the Director General of Correctional Services. In another appointment, Ajay Mukund Ranade will serve as the Additional Director General and Inspector General of Police for Law and Order.

Political Reactions to the Reshuffle

The reshuffle has elicited criticism from political factions within the state. Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Kirti Azad expressed dissatisfaction with the Election Commission’s decision, suggesting that it is an attempt to “appease their masters.” He emphasized that these actions would not sway the public’s loyalty to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Election Schedule Announcement

This change comes shortly after the Election Commission unveiled the election schedule for four states, including West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Assam, as well as the Union Territory of Puducherry. Polling in West Bengal is set to occur in two phases on April 23 and April 29. In Kerala and Assam, voters will cast their ballots in a single phase on April 9. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will also conduct voting on April 9 and April 23, respectively. The counting of votes for all aforementioned regions will take place on May 4, as announced by the Election Commission.
