Maharashtra Chief Minister Orders Inquiry into Mumbai Metro Pillar Collapse

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed his sorrow over the tragic incident involving a collapsed metro pillar in Mumbai. The incident resulted in one fatality and several injuries during construction work in the Mulund area. In response, Fadnavis has ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse. The state government has announced a financial aid package of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the deceased and will cover medical expenses for the injured individuals. The Chief Minister also extended his prayers for the swift recovery of those affected.

Details of the Incident and Response

The incident transpired on Saturday when a section of a cement metro pillar fell, impacting an auto-rickshaw near the Johnson & Johnson facility in Mulund. Official reports indicate that one individual has been confirmed dead, identified as Ramdhan Yadav, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Reports from local authorities state that four other individuals sustained injuries, with two in critical condition. Emergency services swiftly transported the injured to a nearby hospital.

Investigation and Legal Action Imminent

Deputy Mayor of Mumbai, Sanjay Ghadi, confirmed the tragic loss of life and the injuries sustained by others, noting that two individuals are receiving intensive care. Eknath Shinde, a senior official, has taken note of the event and indicated that an inquiry will be conducted to hold responsible parties accountable. Meanwhile, the cause of the pillar collapse is under investigation by relevant authorities.

Emergency Services at the Scene

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has reported that its Metro project team is actively involved in relief operations, working alongside the BMC and disaster management officials. The accident occurred at approximately 12:15 PM near pier number P196 during ongoing construction activities in the RAJV (Milan) area, adjacent to the Mulund Fire Station. Initial investigations hint that a section of a parapet fell from a height and struck the auto-rickshaw below. Emergency responders, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade and traffic police, are on-site to manage the situation effectively.

Injured Individuals Identified

The injured have been identified as Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav, aged 45, who is currently in critical condition, and Mahendra Pratap Yadav, aged 52, along with Deepa Ruhiya, aged 40, both of whom are reported to be stable. Emergency medical teams are providing all necessary care to ensure their well-being following this unfortunate event.

Coordination Among Agencies

According to MMRDA’s statement, rescue operations are being conducted vigorously with collaboration from various agencies, including the BMC, Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Traffic Police, and the Disaster Management Authority. The presence of these agencies at the site of the collapse underscores the seriousness with which the situation is being treated.
