Maha CM Devendra Fadnavis Criticises CJP for Alleged Ultra-Left Views

The CSR Journal Magazine

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has made strong accusations against the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), alleging that it holds “ultra-Leftist views” and aims to incite anarchy in India. Speaking at the India Today Conclave in Mumbai, he contended that the protests organised by the CJP are part of a broader political design that has emerged in response to the perceived ineffectiveness of the current Opposition.

He differentiated between what he termed genuine protests, comprised of individuals expressing authentic grievances, and those he claims are artificially constructed. Fadnavis remarked, “There are two kinds of protests. Some protests are genuine, with people in genuine distress talking about their problems, while some protests are manufactured.” His assertion indicates that he regards the agitation led by the CJP as belonging to the latter category, which he argues undermines legitimate expressions of public concern.

Further, he accused ultra-Leftist groups, who he alleges have lost the ideological struggle, of resorting to specific public issues as a means to challenge the government. “They have lost the ideological battle, and now they have come to the issue-based battle,” he added, suggesting that this shift represents a manipulation of public sentiment to foster dissent.

Claims of Conspiracy Against Constitution

Fadnavis highlighted concerns regarding the manner in which the CJP has reportedly used a copy of the Constitution to question constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission of India (ECI). He termed these actions a “conspiracy against the Constitution,” asserting that the CJP’s ultra-Leftist perspective aims to destabilise democratic governance.

The Chief Minister expressed that such actions pose a significant threat to the rule of law and democratic norms in the country. In his statement, Fadnavis acknowledged that protests over public matters are a common aspect of any developmental democracy. However, he challenged the motives behind the CJP’s protests, suggesting that their intent is not solely to address public issues but to instigate chaos. “This is a conspiracy against the Constitution,” he reiterated, underscoring his view that the group’s actions are ideologically driven rather than genuinely motivated.

Moreover, he cited the BJP-led government’s efforts to address societal differences through dialogue, even with groups holding opposing ideologies, as evidence of a commitment to democratic engagement. He pointed to the government’s interactions with Maoists as an example of this willingness, framing it as an approach that attempts to bridge ideological divides rather than exacerbate them.

Distinction Between Political Protest and Anarchy

During his address, Fadnavis also sought to differentiate between legitimate political protests and what he described as anarchic behaviour exhibited during the CJP’s agitation at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. While he acknowledged that certain requests, such as calling for the resignation of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, could be seen as legitimate political expression, he argued that other aspects crossed into unacceptable territory.

He asserted that the presence of individuals with criminal records at the gathering, along with the derogatory remarks aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, signified a departure from acceptable protest into anarchy. “Asking for the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan or the gathering at Jantar Mantar is not anarchy,” he pointed out, but added that behaviour that incites unrest should not be tolerated.

Finally, Fadnavis acknowledged that challenges in governance persist, particularly in discerning between authentic grievances of citizens and what he termed as manufactured agitation. “Challenges are always there,” he said, indicating that the government must navigate ongoing protests while ensuring that genuine issues are addressed appropriately.
