Kerala Adds Sustainability Lessons in Schools of Wayanad

The CSR Journal Magazine

Schools in Wayanad, one of Kerala’s most disaster-prone districts, will soon teach special ‘green’ skills to students as part of their regular classes. This decision follows repeated floods, landslides, and heavy rains in recent years. These events severely affected the region and showed the urgent need to raise awareness and preparedness among young people.

The Kerala General Education Department, the Wayanad district panchayat, and UNICEF have jointly launched a new initiative called the ‘Green Skill Development for Climate Sustainability in Wayanad’. This project aims to help children build resilience by giving them practical knowledge and skills related to sustainability and disaster readiness.

Kerala launched this programme as part of a wider strategy to tackle the effects of floods, landslides, and extreme weather that frequently impact the district. It targets vocational higher secondary schools, mainly those offering agriculture and tourism courses. The programme teaches students about renewable energy, waste management, sustainable farming, and how to adapt to climate change. These lessons will help young people handle the environmental challenges facing their communities.

Practical Lessons for Disaster Resilience

The ‘Green Skill Development for Climate Sustainability’ project mixes classroom studies with hands-on and field activities. Students learn water and soil conservation, natural resource management, and simple ways to lower the risk of landslides and floods. Teachers receive special training to teach these topics, which are integrated into science and social studies. The programme also includes disaster drills and community awareness drives to extend learning beyond the classroom.

The key goal is to raise a generation of environmentally conscious citizens prepared for emergencies. The project wants to make disaster resilience and sustainability part of everyday life in Wayanad. It balances development with protecting nature.

A Model

Kerala’s decision to start this project in Wayanad shows that the state values education as a tool for long-term disaster risk reduction. Officials have said they may expand the ‘Green Skill Development’ model to other vulnerable parts of the state if it proves successful. The programme aligns with national efforts to include disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in school education.

By focusing on practical green skills, Kerala hopes to build a sustainable approach where youth actively protect their environment while staying ready for natural disasters. This project is a significant step in embedding climate resilience in education. It also highlights Wayanad as an example for other regions facing similar challenges.
