A deeply disturbing case has come to light from Karnataka’s Chitradurga district. A 23-year-old man was allegedly murdered by his sister and brother-in-law. The murder comes after they discovered the boy was HIV positive. The crime, described by authorities as an “honour killing,” has sent shockwaves through the local community.
Accident Leads to Medical Discovery
According to reports, the victim was identified as Mallikarjun, a native of Dummi village in Holalkere taluk. The victim had recently met with a road accident on July 23 while travelling home with friends. He sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a hospital in Chitradurga. However, due to his worsening condition he was shifted to a private hospital in Davangere for advanced care.
During routine pre-surgical blood tests, doctors discovered that Mallikarjun was HIV positive. His sister, Nisha, was informed about the diagnosis. Following this, he was advised to move him to a specialized medical facility for further treatment. However, instead of medical guidance, Nisha and her husband, Manjunath, allegedly devised a deadly plan.
Sister Allegedly Plots Murder Over HIV Stigma
The duo fearing social ostracization and disgrace, the couple decided to kill Mallikarjun. On July 25, they told their family they were taking him to a hospital in Bengaluru. However, during the journey, the duo reportedly strangled him to death using Nisha’s veil. They later returned to the village with his body, claiming he had died en route due to sudden complications.
During the cremation preparations, villagers noticed bruises and marks around Mallikarjun’s neck. Their suspicions prompted them to alert his family. Under mounting pressure, Nisha confessed to her father, Nagarajappa, that she and her husband had killed Mallikarjun, citing his HIV status, mounting debts, and concerns about their parents’ health as the reasons.
Police Hunt for Absconding Accused
Following the confession, Nagarajappa lodged a complaint with the Holalkere police. Nisha has been arrested, while her husband Manjunath remains absconding. A case of murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
This incident has reignited discussions around the deadly consequences of HIV-related stigma and the outdated notions of “family honour” still prevalent in some parts of the country. Activists and healthcare professionals have called for greater awareness and sensitivity surrounding HIV, emphasizing that ignorance and fear continue to cost innocent lives.
Authorities Urge Awareness and Compassion
Senior police officials involved in the case highlighted that the woman admitted to fearing societal backlash and even believed her brother’s diagnosis might endanger their parents, who suffer from chronic health issues. Authorities have urged families to seek professional medical advice and counseling in such situations instead of resorting to violence.
The case continues to unfold as police search for the missing co-accused and work to understand the full scope of the couple’s motives.
