Jharkhand Police Recover Missing Teen’s Remains After Murder Confession

The CSR Journal Magazine

The mystery surrounding the disappearance of an 18-year-old woman in Jharkhand concluded with the recovery of her remains in a forest clearing. Pushpa Kumari, a resident of Pindarajora village, was reported missing nearly nine months prior. On Saturday, her skeletal remains were found in Madhutand forest within Chakulia panchayat following the confession of her alleged murderer, Dinesh Kumar Mahato.

Bokaro Superintendent of Police Harvinder Singh stated that Kumari and Mahato had been in a relationship for three years. The case took a critical turn after Mahato admitted to killing her, claiming that her persistent demands for marriage caused him emotional distress, which allegedly led him to commit the act.

According to police reports, on the day of her disappearance, Kumari had gone to Chas College to enrol in a graduate course. Mahato allegedly met her there, and under the pretext of discussing their relationship, lured her approximately 1.5 kilometres behind the college into a deserted forest area, where the fatal attack took place.

Details of the Crime and Investigation

Police officials revealed that Mahato stabbed Kumari, concealed her body amidst the foliage, and subsequently fled the scene, discarding the bloodied knife along a nearby road. After Mahato’s confession, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was established to conduct a thorough search of the area. This effort led to the recovery of skeletal remains, personal belongings, hair, bone fragments, and the identified murder weapon.

Mahato’s account of events indicated a premeditated plan. His actions raised significant concerns among law enforcement authorities, prompting a review of the police procedures that had been followed since Kumari’s disappearance.

The investigation not only focused on the crime itself but also on the conduct of the officers initially involved in the case. Reports indicated serious lapses in following key investigative protocols, which likely hindered the resolution of the case earlier.

Police Personnel Suspended for Conduct Issues

Following an internal review, it was deemed that some police personnel failed to adhere to crucial directives during the investigation, leading to the significant suspension of 28 police officials, including the station house officer of Pindarajora police station. Suspicion surrounding their conduct included allegations of attempts to undermine the investigation and potentially evade responsibility for the accused.

Superintendent Singh noted that the findings suggested a breach of confidentiality and potential monetary transactions that favoured Mahato. As a result of these revelations, immediate disciplinary action was taken, with the suspended officers facing a departmental inquiry.

Moving forward, Singh has assured the public that the investigation is ongoing and remains a priority for the police. The discovery of Kumari’s remains marks a significant but tragic milestone in a case that had perplexed local authorities for months.
