Jal Jeevan Mission Transforms Rural Purvanchal: Study Reveals Major Gains in Health, Education, and Livelihoods

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, rural eastern Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a transformative shift through the Jal Jeevan Mission, ensuring access to clean drinking water.

A joint study by international voluntary organization WaterAid India and the Geography Department of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University across three districts, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, and Maharajganj, confirms the mission’s deep impact on public health, education, livelihoods, and social cohesion.

Measurable improvements

The study, carried out over three months, involved focused group discussions, interviews, and data analysis. With support from Panchayati Raj representatives, local bodies, and officials at district and block levels, five villages in each district were surveyed to examine the changes on the ground.

The study suggested that the initiative has brought about deep-rooted and measurable improvements in the lives of rural residents in Purvanchal.

Report by WaterAid India

According to a report by WaterAid India, about 93% of rural households in Purvanchal now have access to clean and safe drinking water through taps. Earlier, people depended on wells, handpumps, or other sources, but now most families use tap water for drinking and cooking. This has greatly reduced the need to rely on traditional water sources.

The availability of clean water has led to a noticeable drop in waterborne and infectious diseases in rural areas. The report says that people are now experiencing fewer stomach problems, skin infections, and cases of diarrhea. As a result, medical expenses have come down, and people are now healthier and more productive.

Jal Jeevan Mission

Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, tap connections have also been provided in schools, improving hygiene. Children now get clean drinking water, which has reduced illness and helped increase school attendance. Villagers shared that students are now going to school more regularly and dropout rates have gone down.

Local people have found employment through activities like laying pipelines, building water tanks, and maintaining the systems. This has helped improve household incomes and provided job opportunities at the village level, especially for skilled youth involved in technical work.

Social inequality reduced

Earlier, women had to walk long distances to fetch water. Now, with tap water available at home, they save both time and energy. Women are using this time for other productive work. Social inequality has also reduced, improving community harmony and family well-being.

The study covered five villages from each district. Most villagers who took part in the survey said the Har Ghar Jal scheme has brought about a big change in their lives. Having access to clean water has made them feel healthier, safer, and more self-reliant.
