Is Instagram Adding AI Voice Effects in DMs? New Feature Now in India

The CSR Journal Magazine

Instagram has launched a new AI-driven feature allowing users to modify their voice messages in direct messaging. This update, aimed at enhancing user experience, enables individuals to alter voice recordings while maintaining the original tone and emotion of their messages. The feature, known as AI Voice Effects, is now accessible to users in India.

Available Voice Filters

The AI Voice Effects feature provides eight distinct filters: Chipmunk, Demon, Alien, Robot, Underwater, Stadium, Wobble, and Fishbowl. These creative options enable users to add a playful twist to their voice messages, making conversations more engaging.

How to Use the Feature

To utilize the AI Voice Effects, users must first ensure their Instagram app is updated to the latest version. To begin, open any direct message conversation and select the microphone icon to record a voice note as usual. A new voice effects option will appear alongside the waveform or recording controls. Tapping this option provides access to the various filters available.

Each filter can be previewed in real time, allowing users to select the most suitable effect before sending their message. Once a filter is chosen, it applies instantly, and the recipient will see the name of the effect displayed at the bottom of the message. Furthermore, if a voice note is received with an AI effect, users can tap on the effect label to replicate that style in their reply, fostering an interactive experience.

Comparison with Other Platforms

Instagram is following the trend of implementing AI voice effects, a feature previously offered by platforms like Snapchat and TikTok, which have established themselves with audio and video filters. However, Instagram distinguishes itself by integrating these effects specifically within direct messages, adding a more personal and intimate touch to conversations. This can particularly appeal to younger users who frequently engage in direct messaging on the platform.

Concerns Over Privacy

The introduction of the AI Voice Effects feature comes alongside Meta’s announcement to eliminate end-to-end encryption from Instagram direct messages by May 8, 2026.

The company indicated that a limited number of users chose to use encryption on Instagram and suggested that WhatsApp remains a better option for secure messaging. This decision has raised privacy concerns among some users who worry about the implications of removing encryption from private conversations.
