India Strengthens Global Railway Presence with Major Export Push

Under the flagship ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ initiative, Indian Railways is carving out a strong position as a global supplier of advanced railway systems. From bogies and locomotives to coaches and propulsion technology, India is now supplying cutting-edge railway equipment to countries across several continents.

PM Modi Flags Off India’s First Export Locomotive from Bihar Plant

A significant moment in this export journey came in June 2025, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first export locomotive from the Marhowra manufacturing facility in Bihar. These units, destined for the Republic of Guinea, highlight India’s engineering capabilities and its growing role in the international railway sector. So far, six locomotives have been delivered to Guinea, with more on the way as the plant secures a second major order bringing the total production target to around 150 Evolution Series locomotives for various African nations.

The Marhowra plant, a product of a strategic public-private partnership, has emerged as a beacon of technological innovation and skill development. Its most prominent product the 4,500 HP Evolution Series locomotive is known for exceptional fuel efficiency and high performance even in extreme weather conditions. These capabilities are earning India respect and repeated orders from global clients.

India Expands Global Reach with Rail Exports to 15+ Countries

India’s export portfolio for rail systems has expanded considerably. Metro coaches have been shipped to Australia and Canada, while bogies have reached the UK, France, Saudi Arabia, and Australia. Propulsion systems developed in India are now used in Mexico, Spain, France, Romania, Germany, and Italy. Furthermore, passenger coaches have been sent to Mozambique, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and locomotives to Senegal, Mozambique, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and the Republic of Guinea.

The growing international demand for Indian rail products underscores the country’s evolving manufacturing strength and commitment to designing, developing, and delivering high-quality rail infrastructure to the world.
