The CSR Journal Magazine

The ongoing India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant 2026’ is currently taking place in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. This is the eighteenth edition of the exercise, which commenced on September 21 and will run until October 3, 2026. Troops from the Indian Army and the Mongolian Armed Forces are participating in a series of intensive training sessions aimed at enhancing their operational interoperability and tactical proficiency.

Focused on improving mutual understanding, the exercise encompasses a wide range of activities including weapon training and tactical drills. These activities provide an effective platform for personnel from both nations to engage in collaborative training, thereby becoming familiarised with each other’s operational methodologies.

Training Initiatives and Tactical Drills

As part of the training initiative, personnel from the Mongolian Armed Forces are participating in small arms weapon handling and firing practice. Training sessions include aspects such as weapon familiarisation, safety protocols, loading and unloading operations, aiming techniques, and actual firing practices to ensure effective weapon handling.

Additionally, the Indian Army contingent has demonstrated Room Intervention Drills, which focus on operational procedures within built environments. This component of the exercise includes systematic entry tactics, room clearance strategies, coordinated troop movement, fire discipline, and casualty evacuation methodologies.

These drills highlight essential skills such as teamwork, precision, and situational awareness, which are critical in confined and urban settings. The interactions allow both contingents to exchange tactical methods and improve their understanding of the operating procedures utilised by one another.

Cultural Exchange and Martial Traditions

The exercise also includes a cultural exchange aspect, where members of the Mongolian Armed Forces have showcased their martial traditions through demonstrations of Mongolian Classical Wrestling, known as Bokh, alongside unarmed combat techniques. These presentations provide a glimpse into Mongolia’s rich martial heritage and strengthen interpersonal relations between the troops.

The wrestling demonstrations exemplify strength, agility, and discipline, emphasising the importance of battlefield resilience. This integration of cultural elements into military training serves to foster camaraderie and mutual respect among the participating forces beyond formal tactical interactions.

Overall, the activities outlined in the ‘Nomadic Elephant 2026’ exercise are designed to significantly enhance tactical-level interoperability, professional understanding, and coordination between the Indian Army and the Mongolian Armed Forces. Through joint training and practical engagements, both nations aim to solidify their military collaboration for future operations.
