India Engages in Agreement with BEL for Advanced Mountain Radars

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹1,950 crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to procure two advanced mountain radars for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The deal falls under the ‘Buy (Indian–IDDM)’ category, supporting the Make in India initiative.

Indigenous Technology by DRDO

The radar systems have been designed and developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), a unit of DRDO in Bengaluru. BEL will handle manufacturing, installation, and commissioning along with required infrastructure.

Boost to High-Altitude Surveillance

These radars are specially designed for mountainous terrains where conventional systems face limitations. They will enhance detection and tracking of aerial threats such as fighter jets, drones, and cruise missiles.

Strengthening Air Defence Network

The systems will improve situational awareness and response time in sensitive border regions, significantly strengthening India’s integrated air defence capabilities.

Push for Self-Reliance and Jobs

The project will boost domestic defence manufacturing, support MSMEs, create jobs, and advance India’s technological capabilities, reinforcing the country’s push towards defence self-reliance.
